Can't Stop Distributor Leaking

i'm at my ends w/ this freaking thing.

first the bolt pulled the threads out of the block and wouldn't go tight and walked itself out.

i was able to tap and get a bolt to lock down.

still leaks.

kbox seal kit...

still leaks.

on top of it, it leaks down onto the exhaust and smokes.

theres only about 20k on a newer distributor.

i know this is common. but i was able to fix it on the old motor.

its embarrassing... trying to take this new chick for a ride and your motor is smoking.

I hear ya!
Yeah, it pretty common. I just changed the O ring on mine. So far no leaks. Maybe try a thicker O ring??? Or maybe even trying a non hardening sealant at the base. thats what I'm gonna do if mine starts leaking-again.

We have some industrial suppliers in my area. They sell various parts-including large O rings of all types. Maybe you have something similar in your area. If you know a NAPA guy who knows his stuff, he might be able to fix you up with one too..Sometimes you just gotta wing it!

ok. i would not silicone your distributor if it is leaking.

i used a 40.00 tube of german stuff we have at work. let it sit for over 8 hours to fully cure. there just has to be too much vibration transfered down from the cam. cause i lost all my oil. oil warning came on and i had to shut down the engine and coast to the side of the road.

Glad you caught it in time and didn't lock up your engine.
OK, what is the name of the stuff? And can I get it retail at NAPA, O'Reilly's,etc.?

Loctite® 5970 cured-in-place, silicone gasketing material has fluid resistant formulation that is suitable for flange sealing applications with excessive joint movement. This black, single-component, alkoxy RTV silicone paste is resistant to liquid coolants, oil, and other automotive engine fluids. Non-slumping and non-corrosive, Loctite 5970 low odor, low volatility material does not contain MEKO (methylethylketoxime).

the tube has german writting on it. and i googled and couldn't find anywhere that sells it.

its prolly the best stuff out there... too bad it didn't work in this case. i just don't wanna buy a new distributor because of this.
