Car Dies when hits about 3k rpms..is it my computer

Hey guys...
wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions.
Im not a noob to the Toyota world or the mr2 world..but as with other forums..there are extremely knowledgeable people out there..
Im from Phoenix and will be cool to meet and work on our rides together.

well I about to pick up this 92 MR2. the owner says it doesn't run. Said he changed the fuel filter, put new gas in it and an oil change.
he got is started drove it around. He said when it hits about 3k rmp's it jerks and kinda sputters.

To me i think its fuel related. He said that some one said it was the ECU. and others said it was fuel pump.

Wanted to get some suggestions and advice from you guys..

Let me know what you think.

Thanks in advanced.

Welcome to Toyota Nation!
1st of all, is it a Turbo or N/A ? You said the guy said it didn't run. Why? Your problem could be due to many things. More info is needed. The ECU is the last thing I would be looking at.

Hey,
It is N/A. He said it ran and now all it does is turns but doesnt want to start up.
I will be checking for spark and fuel later on today when i go see it...

would like to get it running until i get a new engine a turbo swap or a v6 not too sure yet..

**How do i check to see if the fuel pump is priming?
beside trying to hear it

Pull the fuel return line from the FPR and crank the engine to see if fuel exits .

Jump B+ and FP in the diagnostic block. This will supply 12v constant to the fuel pump. This will tell you if the problem is the fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Dont pull the fuel line just yet.

This is useful to know if you dont already. If you are familiar with it, the two pins I mentioned are in the same diagnostic block.

Once you jump those two pins, try and start the car. If it does start, you know the fuel pump relay is not functioning but the fuel pump is. If you still cannot get the car to start, leave the same two pins jumped, turn the key to the ON position and check to see if you feel any fuel pressure/flow through the lower fuel filter hose. If you cannot tell, you can check the fuel return line from the rail.

If you would like to follow troubleshooting by the book, the main page for the online service manual is www.mr2-tech.com/bgb.htm

Also, if you are still unsure if you have spark - check the EFI 15A fuse in the engine bay fuse box. This will prevent fuel AND spark if blown.

Does the car completley stop running after it hits 3k or does it just kick back down in RPM? My MR2 at one point wouldnt rev past 3K and it was because my TPS sensor was faulty.
