I blew my headgasket last year, but fixed it myself. Gasket was $58.00 + tax.Stock headbolts were
$5.50ea ..(there's 10)
I had head rebuilt-new valve guides, seals, grind valve seats, resurface and set clearance for $427.00.
$4000.00 sounds really steep.

I've already assmbled the engine. (except for the oil pump which wont be in until next week). Before you decide whether you are going to do this yourself, you need to now what you're getting into.
What are your automotive mechanical skills and knowledge?
Do you have the correct/neccessary tools?
A place to do this?
Do you know a reputable machine shop to check out the head for you for warpage, resurface, etc.?
I suggest you get a manual and look at it and decide from there.

I totally agree I've done some head work inc. head gasket on some of my trucks and unless you have a place and the proper tools you might want to rethink your approach

I've bought a Cometic MHG and ARP headstuds for $207 and labor at a lot of shops is around $300-500... It shouldn't be more than $600-$700 to have it all done RIGHT. We're talking upgrade everything...but this is without headwork. For a MHG it's another $100-200 to have it decked and micropolished. And rebuilding a head gets a little pricey...but then still it's nowhere near even half of $4k...

best recommendation is pay to have an independent shop do it. probably cost less than half that.

the way the dealer works is they provide a full quote w/ brand new everything. cause they don't want the liability of something else failing and spoiling the job and your bring it back saying they messed up.

an independent will charge you the bare minimium to get the job done, but if something else fails... they'll charge you to do the job all over again.

and if you have to ask about doing it yourself. your prolly not ready for a job this big.

Also, the Hose from Hell and Hose from Hell On Earth (HFH, HFHOE as you may have heard) are important to tackle at the same time, if they werent the cause of the failure to begin with. Try your best to find someone with experience with the MR2 Turbo.
