2 quick questions

Do any of the turbo guys on here run an oil catch can? My buddy at work has an SRT 4 that's pretty well modded and he was talking about it the other day and asked if I had one. I've been thinking about it and found some on ebay for about 40 bucks shipped. Just wondering if anybody uses them and recommends them. I have a little blow-by on the intake side of the turbo, but it's about 16 years of build up so I don't think its too bad.

Secondly, my synchros are going out in 2nd and 3rd gear. I'm thinking a new tranny or at least a rebuild is in my future. How do I tell if I have an LSD or not? I know it was an option on the 92, but if I don't have one, I might as well get one when this one goes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Andy.

I'm using a catch can, but it was only about $20.00. They will help keep some of the sludge out of the engine.

I'm using one. I bought an air/oil separator for an air compressor and then screwed the appropriate fittings in and ran some hose. Works well and is easy to drain with a petcock in the bottom.

Let me know if you need more info.

best way you can tell if it has lsd. take Driverside axel off and inside the hole you should see bar. Also i suggest rebuilding youre tranny i went thru 3 tranny all used past 2 months. Just wish i never brought them and rebuilt the original one.

You can also try entering your VIN in the OEM parts finder in the sticky and it will give you info on your specific car.

Check the plate on the door for your transmission code. Factory LSDs will have code E153/733 or E153/735.

You can also check the axle port as mentioned.

It's a swapped 3s, it was originally n/a. Is the vin on the engine somewhere? The donor car is loooong gone.

Maybe this will help you make a determination:
FACTS:
LSD was NOT available on '91-92 cars.

LSD was an OPTION beginning in '93.

LSD was ONLY available on the 3sgte (E153 tranny).

It is a visous coupling and CANNOT be identified by jacking the car up and turning one wheel.

Cars equiped with factory instlled LSD will have a data plate in the drivers door with an "A/TM" designation of either E153/733, or E153/735.(as stated by Ghostyman)

All MkII MR2, turbo or N/A, open diff or LSD will spin both rear wheels.

If you look into the axle port of a factory LSD tranny, there will be visible bar between the 2 side.

Thanks MR2bad, that does help a lot. Since it's a 92 I guess I don't have an lsd. I thought they were an option on all mkIIs, didn't know it wasn't until 93. I don't need one, just thought it would be cool to say my car has one. Oh well. Thanks again.

You're welcome..I wish I had LSD in my tranny too. But the MR2 is very well balanced and 9 times out of 10, both wheels will burn rubber at the same time leaving 2 tires marks. Hence why many think they have LSD even if they don't.
