Toyota MR-2 ok for a 1st car?

I have very recently passed my test and I am thinking of treating myself to get a Toyota MR2 G Limited. I have just turned 25 so the insurance is not as horrific as you would expect. My concern is the rear wheel drive - is it dangerous for a newly qualified driver to even touch one of these? I know someone who has had a MR2 roadster for years and it has never fish-tailed for them - but *she* is a female so perhaps she is just very very very careful. On the hand I heard of horror stories on other forums online.

I would be very interested to hear what people think - whether or not a newly-qualified 25-year-old should stay clear of RWD cars. I should point out that I am not a boy-racer at all and would probably drive slower and be more careful in this then a 'normal' car.

Thanks, Ben

If you're responsible, it should be fine. Be careful with it until you are very familiar with it. When it rains, go to a parking lot and practice turns so you know what happens when the rear end steps out.

Hey you'll be perfectly fine. MR2's as you know have the engine in the back which makes for incredible traction in most situations. I'm 16 and I've been driving around possibly the worst car for a 16 year old boy's first car. A 5-Speed MKII Supra! Front Engine and rwd with a light back end makes it fun in the rain but drive responsibly and you'll be fine.

Have fun with your MR2, i'm sure a 25 year old can handle a MR2 better than a 16 year old can handle a supra

i would say its not a great first car....not very practical...maintenance costs.....will prolly need another reliable car to depend on especially if you live where it snows....
