sequential shifter hangups on 2002

I have a 2002 with sequential shifter. Second time it hung up after being shut down in "s" position. I couldn't get it out of S but could move lever to N and hold it there while starting engine. Still couldn't get it out of S. Downloaded troubleshooting manual and it stated rolling car manually to help realign gears to help tranny to re-learn. Is there anything possible I can do day to day ops to prevent this happening again? It's a real problem if it occurs on a hilly area and in Hawaii the maintenance support is limited at best.
