I'm gonna pull my tranny. I have never pulled a transaxle before. Only front engine with RWD transmissions with drive shaft, rear end differentials.
Do both axles have to come out? Or can I just pull the left axle?
Any tips to make this less of a hassle would be deeply appreciated!!!
OK, Dam!
No, don't have a tranny jack. Just a 4 ton jack. it's big one and jacks the car up quick. I was thinking I could lower the trans with it and roll it out that way. I may be able do borrow one from my Honda racing friend..
You can remove the crossmember, wheels, hubs, axles, etc all as one unit and it makes life much easier. You can then just roll the suspension around on the wheels. That should be just about everything you need to remove (except exhaust) to get the tranny out.
If you have a friend to help, you should be able to get the tranny out with a floor jack.

i wouldn't do all that just to pull the trans. yea it alot easier, but its alot of work on its own part.
i would strongly recommend getting a tran jack. getting it out isn't the problem. keeping it balanced to line up when putting it back in is.
trust me... i used two tire jacks strapped to a creeper. it was a nightmare.
second time i used a engine hoist w/ a long chain... which was better, but still sucked by myself
Removing the trans when the car is up on a hoist is way easier, don't even need a jack, just two guys to pull the trans off and put it back on. No fun at all doing it on the ground.
I'm pretty sure you're going to have to remove most of that stuff anyway. Removing the crossmember and suspension together is a lot easier than removing the individual pieces... you only have to take off about 12 bolts to get the entire thing out of the car and it goes back in very easily.
That looks like alot more work. And it's certainly gotta be alot heavier. I will be doing this by myself. So it has to be self managable.
Thats a good point Drew. I wasn't thinking that far ahead.
I will try to get a hold a tranny jack. The old school front engine/ rear drive tranny's were so much easier.

12 bolts huh? Do you have anymore pics/instructions of this method?

Let's see... off the top of my head:
6 bolts holding struts (3 per strut)
4 bolts holding crossmember to chassis (2 each side... these are long bolts)
1 through bolt holding the rear motor mounts together (or 3 bolts to take the mount off the crossmember)
2 bolts holding arms to chassis
13 or 15 bolts unless i forgot any... you can see everything you need to disconnect in the picture I posted above. It also means you don't have to mess around with the axle nut which can be a PITA to get off.
And I forgot about the allen bolts holding the axles to the transmission. Probably 6 or 8 per axle....
EDIT: Oh, you'll also have to disconnect the brake lines with a wrench.
Yep, trans and engine are still mated. You can roll the crossmember/suspension around but you want to make sure the axles are supported (you can see some bungee cords in my picture) so the boots don't tear.
Once you get that out, you've got full access to the tranny and engine.
You might want to do something to support the engine while the tranny's not attached -- I think it'll only be held on by the front and passenger motor mounts at that point.
i've replaced the clutch on my 91T 3 times on jack stands using a plain floor jack... it's far from fun, but not too horrible.
