I just recently got an automatic transmission 1986 MK1 MR2 from my aunt who hasn't driven it in about 15 years or so. She sent it to her mechanic who got it running though i'm not sure of exactly what he did to the car. I picked up the car on Monday night and drove it with no problems on Tuesday. Today however, when i tried to start up the car, there was a loud screeching noise coming from the right side of the engine and that area would start to smoke. The car wouldn't start so i had it towed to my house and I'm not sure what could be wrong with it. Anyone have any ideas? I also wanna start learning about cars more since i felt useless when i couldn't tell what was wrong with it, for those of you who are experienced with cars, how did you start becoming more familiar with engines and stuff of the sort?
You're description is very vague... You will have to be alot more specific. Trying to diagnose a noise is very difficult without actually hearing the noise yourself-or at the least, having a more detailed description.
As far as learning about cars? Do alot of reading. read threads in this forum, get a manual for your car and study it. Look around under you hood at the engine, hang out with guys who are into cars, maybe even take some vocational classes. Having a passion for cars is also a great motivator..
Well my knowledge of cars is very limited so I can't really give a detailed description of what seems to be wrong. A friend of mine who was nearby when i was trying to get the car started asked me to check the belts, and the smoke was also coming from the area the belts were. Could the belts have caused a high pitched screeching noise?
Yes, and typically that is the only noise belts make. However, i doubt that the reason your car wont start is because of the belt(s). Does it turn over?
Also, do you have a better idea of where the smoke was coming from? (top of the engine/under the engine) this will help in eliminating possible problems.
Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge on cars but what exactly does a car turning over mean? As for where the smoke was coming from i can't say since there was so much of it. I was standing on the right side of the car looking into the engine and the smoke started from the very right side of the engine does that help at all? >_< I wish i could give more specific information, bleh.
Ohh that's what it means, thanks! And yea, it did turn over, it sounded like it was trying to start with the screeching sound at the same time and when i stopped turning the key the screeching continued but the engine stopped, until i took out the key.
Smoke could be lots of problems - maybe have a friend crank the car while you look at the engine to see where the smoke is coming from (i realize that it is coming from the right side of the engine, but it would be more helpful to know if it is coming from the top of the engine or the bottom... from what i remember blown head gaskets are relatively common in MR2s, which is why i ask)
Im actually very surprised that the screeching continues after you stop trying to start the car, how long does it continue? Belts shouldnt be moving unless your car is running or you are trying to start it, and the only way belts will make noise is if they are in fact moving.
Sorry i cant be more help, Gen 1s arent really my forte - post some more info and someone might be able to point you in the right direction
when i put my key in the ignition, nothing would happen. when i turned to "start" it would crank but never start, and when i left the key in "run" the car would keep trying to start itself.
that was my problem. that screeching your hearing is the starter.
my fix, there is a loose engine ground. my is a second gen motor so it is different. but my bad ground was behind the intake manifold.
