I have a 2000 spyder with 50k miles. The check engine light came on the other day but the car runs fine... Is there a way I can pull the codes ? I've only had the car 2 months and this is my first issue. Hopefully its not to major...
I suspected as much. I have an appointment to have it checked out at the end of the week and Im sure they'll stick it to me no matter what. Thanks for the reply.....
Just tell them to retrieve the code without diagnose if you want to tackle that yourself. Or find out if your neighborhood parts store would pull codes for you. Or get your own code reader, if you plan on working on the car yourself.
I have a 2001 Spyder. Every once in awhile in the morning when warming it up, the CEL would come on. I had it checked out and it was #3 cylinder misfire. But the car always ran just fine. The 1st time it did it the car only had about 15K miles on it and platinum plugs! It's done it a couple of more times over the years, but i got tired of paying $40.00 for a diagnostic, so I just reset the CEL. Car runs great! Idunno

Is it always #3 cylinder? Do you have the freeze frame data?
It would be interesting to see the freeze frame data, if you had them.
Seems like some of the newer generation of Toyota engines had been having some issues with random misfire during cold start; something to do with valve hanging open or something to do with the valve-train. It doesn't happen all the time just once in a while, and not always the same cylinder. Not sure if the MR2 Spider engine fall into one of those category though.
My tech friends are import experts. Excellent mechanics. great at problem solving and getting it right the
1st time. Plus honest too.
But they pretty much said what you stated. Only thing they added was the presence of so much moisture here-even on cold mornings. Arkansas is so humid-all the dam time.
Even though it probably won't affect the operation of the vehicle except for the occasional CEL, I wouldn't be surprised that Toyota may have TSB for that.
