should i buy this mr2?(also mr2 performance questions
this guy i know has a 1991 manual turbo black mr2. the odometer just hit 70,000 miles today. it has aftermarket exhaust, an intake, and a bov. the a/c was removed(the guy doesnt use it and wanted less weight)and the leather is cracking a little. he has owned it since 94. he wants 6k. should i buy it? i have wanted an mr2 for the longest but could never find a turbo model in good shape for that cheap. the body is fine, paint is awesome...the car has been well cared for. also, are aftermarket parts reasonably priced for it? i mean, if i want more power out of it...say 300hp, what should i do, and how much would it cost(general figure). i always figured that they were expensive to work on cause of the engine room. also, please give some general tips, like how much you can boost it on stock internals, how much hp you can get with this, this, and this...just please, help me. i only have a few days to decide before he officially puts it up for sale. thanx a lot
2nd of all: If you really dont think you can search for a 2 anymore, buy it. But I wouldnt...
1. I wouldnt by a car that was modified because you know that its been pushed or raced.
2. BOV = its running rich...
3. No A/C, if you need it you have to get it installed again
It DOES have low milage, if the exterior is in good condition and only the leather is bad, ask him if he'd bring it back to stock, and re-install the A/C for the same price. If so get a mechanic to check it out, do a compression and emissions test, and if the 3S-GTE is still in good shape then thats a low milage good condition 2.
To answer the other questions...
1. 15 LBS of Boost on factory turbo and internals with no supporting mods.
2. Its not as hard to work on the engine as NON-owners claim it is.
3. Modifications always cost alot, but you'll get more horsepower per dollar on a Turbo.
4. All the rest of your questions are answered in the Primer
thanx. i was reading the power primer when you replied. btw, it was never raced. i can guarantee it. the guy heard the car was fun and sporty. in the first month he had it he put about 8k into it in engine mods, but that was a while ago...it was kinda expensive them. anyway, within a few months, he took it all off except for the bov, int, and exh, because hed get tickets for driving over the speed limit(he also said all that stuff made it unreliable...imagine that). ive never had a car with a/c, so it isnt anything new for me. at least this time it isnt weighin down the car and not working. any, thanx alot for your response. does that help you at all, or do you need to know anything else?
no, he put 8k into the engine, but removed it after his 3rd ticket(i never drove an mr2, but he said they feel normal but youre goin like 90mph, so he got pulled over alot...is that true?)actually, 300hp doesnt sound too hard or expensive to get. i own a skyline in japan(im military stationed in japan till last yr, but the s'line is in my wifes fathers garage till i get back. if you think im lyin, ill post pics, links, scanned pics, etc)it isnt a gtr though. it has a single turbo 2 liter, and 260hp cost about 3-4k cause parts were expensive in japan. i have a mustang here in n.c. thats set up for drag...i hate drag...i run 11.8's, but the front tires are skinnies. im used to racing through the mountains of iwakuni japan. drivin the stang just isnt fun. what about the mr2? i heard they are really fun to drive. thats what im lookin for. a fast, fun, well handling car. btw, i cant begin to explain how helpful your power point sticky has been. thanx alot

If you drive this thing you will not have to ask any of these questions, because these cars are awesome. I just wanted to test drive one and ended up buying it 2 days later.
actually, my mistake. i did drive a 97, but it was n/a. thats why i wanna buy one so bad. it felt great. but i never drove it up to 90mph though. too much traffic, so i couldnt tell if what he said is true, although i have heard that before
amazing cars.. bought one when i was 19 and i'm 21 now... 2nd car and i'll never purchase another car unless it's another mr2... when i'm married i'm just gonna buy a nice 4 door wagon and have my 2 in the garage... Best experience driving it and by far the greatest car in my opinion... I just love it!
And i say go for it.... but the 2nd post was interesting to read.... it's really your call but have it checked out beforehand...

where did u drive a 97??....not in north america.....
no. read above. i was stationed in japan. my wife is japanese. her brother let us use his mr2(n/a) to go to hiroshima for something, and i was in the middle of changing the clutch on the skyline
i thought i read somewhere that u were in japan...couldnt find it the second read thru...how was it driving a RHD....i dont think i could shift with my left......
its virtually the same. ppl say it will probably feel weird but its no different. also, the shift pattern is the same, only on the other side of you. 1 3 5
2 4 r
the pedals are even in the same order. its just hard gettin used to drivin on the left side of the road. another thing about his mr2 that i thought was cool was that the foglights turned when you turned the steering wheel. do us ones do this? if so, this one im buying doesnt have f/l's, so can i put the moving ones in?
