17x8 with 215/40 series Thats about it for the front.
18x9 with 245/40 series, alot depends on offset too.
You can go 10" wide with rolled fenders in rear.
IMO, 18 is too tall for the MR2..just my 2 cents

It really depends what kind of suspension you are running. You can run wider tires on stock perches. There is an MR2 in my garage right now sitting on 18x11's with 265's in the rear.... stock bodied with rolled fenders.

If you want to be 'safe'.... I would run a 17x9+38 (245/40) and 17x8+38 (215/40). That will look extremely womanly though.... I'd recommend rolling your fenders and running something more aggressive.

Whether you have to roll fenders will depend on the offset. 9" is pretty wide for the front.8" wouldbe better.
Offset= 38-42
Read the post above yours.

I'm running 18x8 with 35's in the front, 18x8 with 40's in the back. Probably gonna go with 19x8.5 in the back, looks like there's more room back there...
