bad in snow

I have just recently purchased a 91 n/a in OK and then brought it back to Indiana. last night we had our first snow and the handling in the snow wasnt very good. It could have a lot to do with the tires. although they are brand new there a low pro with shollow tred. anyone had much experience with these cars on the snow? Im a little worried about wreckin it because so far ive fallen in love with this car.

The weight distribution and RWD will make it easier to lose control than FF. Same thing with rain. You just need to drive very carefully and slowly.

The first time I took my turbo out in the rain, the rear end started kicking out every time I gassed it around corners. You need to anticipate it. I highly recommend going to a deserted parking lot and practicing so you know how to react when it starts spinning and also what the cars limits are on slippery surfaces.

Slow BEFORE the turn. Do not touch your brakes! Rain is not so bad as snow. Caution is called for. I don't even take my 2 out in the rain, but I have a Tacoma SX 4x4 for any bad weather.

Definately take turns easy. Like they said, you now have the weight of the engine in the back. much easier to kick the back out with them. Good luck and be safe!

how does weight over the back make it more likely to fish tail?

I always figured that the reason FWD is better at starting and staying straight in the snow is because the weight of the engine was over the drive wheels, so it helps the tires get traction

where as most front engine/rear wheel drive cars (and 2wd trucks) have only the weight of the sheet metal/axle/tires making it more prone to fish tailing, because it has less weight over the drive wheels, and it's essentially trying to "push" against the weighted down front

I figured mid engine cars should act like front engine/FWD cars since the weight of the engine is over the drive tires...is this not true?

Well take into consideration, an FF layout is pulling the car. No chance of wheel spin in the rear whereas in an FR, MR, RR layouts, too much throttle and they're more likely to spin in a turn.

Plus with the weight in the back, the momentum and the g-forces are more likely to pull the heavy end of the MR2 outwards in a turn, especially in the snow.

A week after i finished swapping a 3SGTE into my MK1 it snowed like a bastard. I had bald tires and I did just fine in the snow. Its all about driving technique and skill. You just have to know how to drive the car.
