arp head stud problem
the nut is a 12 point 12mm. I have found a deep socket that fits it but it wont fit through the head to reach the nut. Do i need to get that part of the head machined or something? has anyone had this problem also?
thin walls are fine. i have a set of thin wall impact sockets that i've used to over 100 lb/ft on a daily basis at the shop. no problems. as for the socket, i have used a craftsman 12 pt deep, but i also bought a kobalt that worked just fine.
I just got a 12pt 12mm deep iimpact THIN WALL socket in the mail today and it still didnt fit! I'm so pissed!... I can either take it to the machine shop or buy stock bolts and try to sell the arp studs... what do u guys think?
Thats strange.
Did the ARP studs package say anything about having to machine the head to use them? I don't have any experience with those studs/bolts, but it doesn't seem right that you would have to machine the head to use them-especially without ARP saying so.. Is it possible they're the wrong studs?
Lots of guys have used them but no one has ever mentioned this problem....dunno....
^ Kinda OT, but how do you like the Kobalt tools? 90% of my tools are Craftsman, but I have seen some good prices on Kobalt. But I didn't know anyone using them or the true quality.
only have a few sockets. they are ok. ergonomics aren't great. i have a bunch of craftsman as well, but have lots of specialty Snap-on, Mac, and Matco. i also really like Gear Wrench. i have the regular set of wrenches and i also have the fixed-end/ratchet end extra long handle wrenches.
OK, There's a Matco guy that lives down the street. I got my head bolt tool-whatever you call it - from him. Kinda pricey at $40.00. But he has some really good stuff. The thing I like about craftsman is the free replacement of sockets, wrenches, etc. And they're cheaper-- Like me!!!
well, Matco is ok, not always the greatest, though! they are cheaper for the most part! all of the tools i mentioned have lifetime replacement. my biggest concern/criteria for tools is that they WORK! i've bent wrenches as i was taking off bolts. i literally bent one wrench to the point it looked like one of those bent wrenches! (don't know if you've ever seen one of those!) true, the lifetime replacement is good too, but i can't take the chance of being somewhere or doing something critical and then BAM! my tool breaks!
we should stop threadjacking and start a tool thread or something!
The thin wall deep well 12pt 12mm should fit, as I have used many ARP Studs on many 3SGTE engines. Forget deep impact, go to Sears and grab a Craftsman socket. If that still doesnt work, try posting some pics of the problem and the socket. If nothing else, lets hope you didnt receive the incorrect studs, since that is the only other reason I can fathom that this is not working for you.
Hope this helps!
