noises

my 91 n/a has started making some noise. Its a ticking sound coming from the motor. i had a guy listen to it and he thought it sounded like a rod but ive heard what a rod sounds like and I dont believe thats what it is. Its very quiet unles im runnin higher rpms like on the highway when Im just driving the shit out of it. lol what are some things I could look for to try and diagnose the noise. if it requires the much work i plan to just turbo swap it. any input would be appriciated. thanx

Check for exhaust leak at the manifold. Also check valve clearance.
