help please timing ?

i have a 1988 toyota mr2 with 1.6 engine getting gas to fuel rail and getting fire but want hit a lick would this be timing or is there something else it could be

Put #1 piston on TDC , then check rotor postition and crankshaft pulley timing mark orientation.
Do you have a timing light?

was looking around on other web sight and found where it says firing order is 1-3-4-2 if thats right my buddy told me wrong he told me it went 4-3-2-1 problem i have is its getting fire and getting fuel but it dont even try to start so my buddy said it was timing belt i had to go get it the other day it wouldnt start i just kept turning it over and pumped the gas and it started but was running rough but smothed out drove it home no problems run good but next day wouldnt start
