you should have considered the SW20 water outlet on the side of the head instead and used the SW20 filler neck.... it's just a fillerneck that runs down tothe engine..... nothing else (unlike the AW11 one that's basically an adapter between 2 hoses.

but.... based on the photos I can't tell if that would work for you either. What I can see that would work.... is removing that FWD fan sensor then screwing in a port for the SW20 filler neck.... installing it over the alternator.

I probably shouldn't say this.... (and I wasn't as meticulous as you)... but my 5sfe MK1.22 swap took about 6 1/2 weeks from getting the idea to completion.

any chance you have any photos of the SW20 setup? being that my Mr2 isn't running yet, i am not adverse to changing things in order to make it easier to work on, etc. as it is, i'm going to be fighting an uphill battle with tightening everything down, simply because of where the alternator rests. if i were to go with an SW20 type setup, the alternator would rest under the intake manifold, which would give me a lot more room for bolting down the header to the head, etc.

yeah. my swap is taking a lot longer. figure that 2 years of the 4 years, it was sitting with zero progress. that is my fault.

since the Mr2 has been back in my hands, a LOT has happened. and, not counting the detail i've put into my swap, your swap is a lot easier as it came from an Mr2, so 99% of what you needed was already in place. in general, the engine/transmission mounts, some wiring and a bit of coolant lines were your biggest obstacles.

i had the exact same obstacles to overcome, plus the coolant hose issue and then i've been waiting on my wiring guy for some time - i have no confidence when it comes to engine wiring.

as per the amount of detail, the engine was sent off to a machinist and fully rebuilt. every gasket was replaced, all the freeze plugs are new, the bottom end was balanced, the cylinder walls were honed, the block was fully cleaned and magnafluxed... all of the injectors were sent out and cleaned and balanced... there is a phenolic spacer on the intake... i bought a new fuel pressure regulator and fuel damper... there is more to it, but you get the idea.

in short, i did not want to go and start it up and think 'oh crap! what did i miss? what did i overlook?' i wanted to take care of EVERYTHING i possible could before that moment. of course, that means i get to wait quite a bit longer than you did with your swap.

one other reason why my swap has taken so long is waiting for parts, then testing / test fitting those parts, and sometimes ordering replacement parts, etc... if i already had a pre-set list of every part needed, this swap would have gone a lot faster.

Yes and no. Had to do custom mounts, had to rewire a big portion of it, I built custom mounts for everything accessory-wise (I didn't want anything being bolted in to have to drill into the chasis), custom exhaust.

The fact that the wiring actually came from an MR2 and it went into an 86 MR2 made it more difficult. The sw20 wiring is closer to the 87+ wiring and that caused quite a bit of extra wiring work......

if you wanted to wire yours I can help you by explaining what it is I did and the tools I used.... and once you have that in order the wiring itself is easy.... just pay attention to what you're doing but it's straight forward. After I had all of my 'guides' in place the whole of wiring probably only took about 5 hours (and that includes everything from running wires to wrapping/looming it all)

here's a photo of the SW20 coolant neck I have as installed in the 86....

I fear the wiring in my '91 is going bad. Wires are getting brittle. I've already had to rewire the distributor. I unplugged it and all 4 wires just broke in half..

and yes, the new fuel gauge floater is already installed. no photos because there isn't much to see.

i'll be dropping off the donor AW11 harness to my wiring guy this evening. 3 last plugs are needed to make the conversion 100% stock (looking) and plug and play.

i've also ordered every possible t-bolt clamp that i might need to seal up the overly complicated coolant system - those should arrive mid-week. and i've just ordered the last silicone reducing and angled coupler and all clamps that i'll need for that too.

beyond that, it is a matter of some small hoses, putting the harness on and putting a battery into place... and it should fire up.

for all that are in attendance when it cranks over the first time, you will see a grown man cry tears of joy.

and today's progress is done! a new Sachs clutch master cylinder has been installed and bled. a new clevis assembly has also been installed!

now, i just need some assistance to properly bleed the clutch pedal. next on the list, is a new brake master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder.

i'll take photos of the new clutch master cylinder and the clevis setup later.

I like the 2nd gen brake masters on a first gen..... they're aluminum, bigger, and cheaper.

so, i feel the need to update.

a number of times my wiring friend has come over and we've unraveled more and more of the harness that was originally 'modified' (by a different friend of mine)...

without mincing words, the first friend hacked up and f---ed up the original harness - nearly to the point of it being useless. i truly cannot describe the sheer amount of frustration and anger that i feel. if given the opportunity, i might beat the living piss out of the original friend for NOT being honest about not being able to take on this task, and instead giving me a completely half-assed harness. the current gentleman that is working on the harness is an electrical engineer and estimated that, if i were to have just plugged in the original harness, there is a chance that my car would've caught on fire.

so... yeah. knowing what i know now, i could've just sent off the harness to a professional shop and been driving my Mr2 about 1 year ago (my rough estimation). but no, i was CHEAP and asked a friend to do it.

what do i hope people get from this post? don't be cheap. either do a harness yourself (if you have the knowledge/skill) or spend the money and send it off to a shop to be professionally done. cutting corners and saving a few $ right now, might cost you a hell of a lot more later.

Like I said.... when i did mine....

I downloaded an 86 BGB and a 91 BGB.... I had pinouts of the N1 connector/COR in the trunk and the 2 grey connectors by the battery..... then went through the 91 bgb electrical diagram and created a spreadsheet of every connector on the 91 engine harness.... I took the 86 harness, cut the ends off that I needed and wired it up by hand.

it sounds like a long proces.... it took about 4 hours to create the spreadsheets and get the pinouts.... and then about 2-3 hours of wiring. It's actually much simpler than you might expect

so, the wiring thing did not work as hoped. a few weeks back, a buddy and i went to the local Pick N Pull and found an 88 Celica GTS with the engine harness that was 99% intact! only part missing what the alternator wiring.

so, i packed up a spare 4age/aw11 harness, the hacked up 3sge/st162 harness and the 99% perfect harness and sent them all off to Tweak'd Performance. around the end of this month, i should have my completely finished harness in my hands!

then the joy REALLY begins!


but, as of today:
Mr2 shifter bushings - installed!
also put the exhaust on partially, just for fitment purposes. it will be a tight fit, but it'll work.
also, i need to make customer bracket to hold the air flow meter stable, otherwise it's going to bounce around a bit...

so, i went to the local Toyota parts counter and bought some sensors. here is a photo of the new and old sensors.

new sensors are on top, old sensors are on bottom.

oh, while at the counter with my old sensors (checking to make sure that i got the right ones), a guy said i should just polish my old ones up and throw them back on. i turned to him and said 'no thanks. i'm buying all new sensors.'

wtf?! what a stupid thing for that guy to say.
