Instead of buying those rediculously priced Flywheel bolts from the stealership, I want to get them from a local company who carries all types and grades of fasteners. I wondering what grade should they be? They have them in grade 8.8 metric grade (or listed as 5 in standard grade). Is that strong/hard enough? Torque spec is 80 ft. lbs for flywheel.
In the construction industry, any bolts used to fasten or mount anything to any type of machinery require grade 8 or higher by OSHA.
Don't know if this information is of any use, but I don't think I would cut corners on something like flywheel bolts. The Toyota bolts aren't all that expensive, and the ARP bolts offered are reasonable as well. I'd spend the extra couple of bucks and not take the risk.
Just my $0.02

I am sure you could find something that would fit and take the load.
However after looking at the bolt it appears to have a shoulder, extra long treads, a 12 point drive and assume aircraft grade material, bla, bla, bla. features not common in standard bolts.
For under $50 for a new ARP set in my opinion not worth the risk!
If you have the old bolts, unless they have been stretched you should be able to reuse them or just replace them.
Yes, did some reading/research last night. Grade 8 or higher is required.
We have a company here called American Thread. They have everything for a fraction of what Toyota asks for.In all different grades. These are grade 8, hex flanged. Max torque is 90 ft/lbs. Only 80 is required.
Stock Toyota bolts are not reusable.
Thanks guys
I would be concerned about the shoulder at the top and the depth of the head (to ensure the clutch plate doesn't hit it).
not entirely sure that the grade 8 would be strong enough..... this being because you may have to torque it to 80 and it has a max of 90ft/lbs, but that's it's tensile strength, and the bolt needs to have side to side strength as well (can't think of that term).

yeah, after reading yours ^, toyomoho and 4DMR2t's posts, I think I will either go with OEM or ARP. The ARPs are $53.00 shipped.Unfortunately, here in Hicksville USA, no one carries ARP stuff for the MR2.
I will check tomorrow for the OEM's. I have a firend up there at the stealership who gives me a discount and then go from there. I've also heard the ARP's are reusable. Is this true?
