Gen1 87 oil pressure regulator/cooler

Hey guys, i'm just working on building a header for my newly rebuilt 87 4age, and the oil filter is just plain out in the way! My dad and i were working on relocating the oil filter, but after reading my mr2 manual, they talk about the pressure regulator. After some further examining, i found that its basically a by-pass valve, allowing extra pressure to go through the oil cooler and then back into the oil pan. Is this regulator really important? We figured we had better keep it, (unless someone here could show me otherwise) and continued to design a part that would relocate the oil filter, also allow the use of a larger filter, now my next question is could this larger, relocated filter change how the by-pass valve works, changing the pressures? I just put new main and rod bearings in that i would really love to not wash, however it would be great to not starve them for oil at the same time. thanks a ton!

Oil...

Well I have a 86 4A-GE and my oil temp is way over the top causing the check engine light to come on. This isn't a really big problem, Well I don't think it is but I think a relocation of the filter is a good idea and I would keep the bypass.

Nope, you can remove the adapter and the lines to the cooler (you could remove the cooler, but then you would have to redesign that coolant pipe and no need to).

4age's and 4agze's in Japan (in FF and FR layouts, not 100% sure on the aw11's) didn't have coolers. My wifes aw11 doesn't have a cooler attached, my 4agze in another aw11 doesn't have a cooler, and my ae92 smallport doesn't have a cooler.... no problems with any.... except less oil leaking now!

you can remove it by going to a junkyard, pull the oil filter off of a 4afe (or any early 90's/late 80's toyota) then using a 24mm socket pull off the adapter that threads into the block (male to male). On yoru car, drain the oil, pull the cooler lines off (they will drip even after oil is drained), pull off the adapter, and replace with your new M to M adapter.
