Gen1 egr delete

a guy i work with keeps telling me to remove my egr system and my car will run better. the egr tube on my other car became clogged and it ran like crap until i cleared the clog. so i am just curious as to why removing the entire system would make my car run better. he also suggests putting a small filter on the valve cover where a hose connects it to the intake. i am a firm believer in keeping things stock, but am curious.

Removing the EGR will lower the intake charge temperature alittle bit. But your mileage will go down alittle too. If you have smog inspections it wont pass either.Aftermarket intake manifolds don't usually use the EGR either.
Putting a filter on the valve cover breather will filter out any sludge or oil that may exit the valve cover and go back into the engine. Many people use oil catch cans.

you can remove the entire EGR system... but it isn't used at wide open throttle at all.

I don't have smog and don't use EGR's myself, but that's me.

if you do put a filter off the valve cover you'll need to cap where the hose goes to on the intake manifold.

Removing the EGR won't make the car run better. It's mainly a cosmetic mod that cleans up the engine bay. Same goes for putting a filter on the PCV (the valve cover -> intake part).

The biggest changes from removing the EGR will be higher EGTs (exhaust gas temps) and more NOx emissions.

I removed mine years ago and quite frankly, I can't see any difference or benefit-except for uncluttering the engine-which I do like.

Didn't think about that. And have never seen/heard it ever mentioned. Good point
