Grinding in 1st gear

I have a 1992 MR2 turbo and theres a weird grinding noise when I'm first gear. When I'm at a complete stop and start moving my car, theres a grinding noise but I'm not sure where its coming from. I can only hear it for a brief second. I'm afraid that it might be a transmission problem.

If someone knows what this may be, please help me out. It'd be much appreciated. Thank you!

Pretty hard to determine with just that info. Noises are the hardest. especially when you don't even know where it coming from. Could be many things.
Brakes?
Wheel bearings?
Clutch?
Tranny?
As far as I know, the Turbo trannies are not prone to regular problems.
I did have to replace the wheel bearings on both sides of my '91. It was more of a low , humming noise. Bearings can give a grinding noise when they get really bad.

yea at first i was thinking it might be my brakes. but after examining it pretty carefully i'm thinking it most likely is my tranny or clutch. a friend of mine suggested that i drain the tranny fluid and all that to see if it stops.

if it is tranny...go with "Synchromesh" and Redline MT90 50-50 ratio...

Do your RPM's seem high for the speed you're going? How many miles on the car?

if it's a turbo, you should be able to tell if the clutch is slipping... throw it in 3rd instead of 2nd while starting from a light or something, then punch it...if when it starts boosting the RPM's climb at a rate that is not consistent with the acceleration of the car, then you have a failing clutch...

No, the RPM's look pretty normal to me. I have about 93,xxx km on it.

It is a turbo... but I don't exactly know how to tell if the clutch is slipping. I have tried taking off at 2nd gear before but the grinding is even worse. But I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Do you mean that I should try shifting from 1st to 3rd? Or do you mean that I should try starting up from 3rd? And if it turns out that it is a failing clutch, how much (roughly) is it to fix something like that?

Basically go into 3rd when you're going 15-25MPH and floor it and when it boosts, if your clutch is going bad, the clutch will slip...and the RPM's will raise...

But grinding...? Is it only in a certain gear? Is it only when you shift into gear or while using the gear(s)? And you said you drained the transmission gear oil...you did replace it right? What with? The Redline MT90 and Synchromesh is suppose to help a failing transmission. Factory oil is for a good transmission... If it is REALLY bad, go 100% synchromesh...and then it's time to start shopping for a new tranny because it's still on it's way out...

Damn... ok I'll try that out today. So basically if it really is the clutch that is slipping, the RPM's will rise but my car will virtually go nowhere?

Now I'm hoping that its a clutch problem. But I don't remember what type of tranny oil was used.... I think it was regular motor oil but I could be wrong. I'll try to find out today.

Thanks for all your help btw. Very much appreciated! =)

Do this: stop on a hill, pointing downhill. Engine off and car in neutral, foot on brake. Release the brake slowly. If the noise is there, it's either brakes or wheel bearings. If not, we're back to clutch/trans. If no noise with with above test, then my money is on the throwout bearing.

I'm sorry, YES gear oil is what I meant haha. But I did try punching it in 3rd and the RPM's seem normal for going at 20mph. Man this is tough... All I know is that when its in 1st and I take off from a complete stop, it grinds for a sec and stops. If I rev a little higher to take off, there are times when it doesn't grind at all. And if I try to take off in 2nd, the grinding is jus as bad.
