Narrowband, no on both counts. Wideband are worth having and hopefully it's accurate or you could have problems.
I've built a DIY kit for reading a regular Bosch wideband sensor. I haven't tested it yet but I'll try putting it in the downpipe soon. More info is at

If you're going to try any type of tuning, a wideband is a worthy investment.
Does your downpipe have an extra bung for another O2 sensor?
