I Need Help Please!

Ok so I have an 87 Mk1 5 spd. It looks all nice and pretty on the outside but I have a few major problems :

1. installed new brake booster/cylinder. everything worked great and the pedal was stiff after bleeding. Then I started my car. I lost all pressure. We took off the vacuum hose from the booster, and we have pressure but almost no stopping power.

2. Whilst doing this my clutch pedal became overly stiff, not sure how. is this a problem?

3. Also my t-tops leak(don't they all?) but I purchased and installed a new seal only to find out the leak was slit between the top and the actuall frame. even though it is almost flush to the milimeter! Whats the best, easiest fix?

Also I am looking for a really good parts place, im in Tampa, FL. Any ideas?

Firstly, try bleeding the brakes with the car running. Not sure how this changed anything with the clutch unless you've done something to the clutch master cylinder, which is in no way tied in with the brakes. Do you know if the clutch is functioning properly? Oddly/overly stiff petal can be a release (aka throw out) bearing, or you may have lost a spring from the hub of the clutch disk. If it is working properly, was there any other work done on the car aside from the top seals or the brake booster?

On the t-top seals, I am not sure where exactly the persistent leak you speak of is coming from, but for the best results, you should replace the seal that is in the top itself (where the window and top meet) in addition to the seals that go round the top where it meets the chassis (U-shaped seals that also go round the sides around the window itself). If you dont replace these in tandem, its likely why you would still have leaking. Hope this helps!

the new brake booster was faulty. I fixed that problem. I purchased new weatherstrips for the actual frame that the t-top sits in. they seem to be nice and snug but they leak just where the t-top fits into the actual frame(right where the window/rubber seal meet) it only leaks some of the time. and it leaks the same on both side.

Gotcha, in this case you will need to purchase the seals that go in the top itself. Unfortunately this requires the disassembly of the t-top itself, including the parts of the locking mechanism. Not a fun job.

The only other possible fix is much less obnoxious as well as affordable is available from KBox. They change the angle of the top by changing the angle where the t-top locks go into the chassis. You can find them here:

Although it is not a guaranteed fix, it is a much more affordable option to run for a try. I feel its usually worth the cost for any chance of stopping those persistent leaks.

Hope this helps!
