How much do you think I'd be able to pick up a junker project MR2 for?

well that could have alot of different answers since we dont know what year your looking for...turbo or non, ect. But for the sake of giving something ill assume you mean mk2 turbo. Ive seen plenty of them go for as low as 3500-3k in running condition. When i say running i mean the motor works but has some mechanical issues. And also im not sure how bad of a "junker" your looking for as in what kinda work are you looking to do.

I got mine for 500. Lucky snag, being it was one of those friend of a friend deals. It didn't run, has issues, was overheating, and had primer and a little bondo.

Tried selling it when I needed garage space however, after I fixed the overheating for 3k. Mr2's around here are like gold, and I had a bunch of people interested. However I though about it and decided to keep it.

Moral of the story is, look hard enough, and you can find killer deals. Same with my other car. Got my 96 240sx for 1800. Try looking for ones that might have easily fixed problems, if you have the time and money to throw at them. Otherwise save up and get one that runs.

Yea, sorry I probably should have been more specific
Well I mean it's all in the planning stages
I'm looking at either an MK1 or an MK2
I assume there would be a fair price difference between the two
It's probably gonna be for a weekend or track car
It doesn't necessarily HAVE to run or look good
Repainting it would be fine
and I'm looking into engine swaps etc if necessary
Is there any difference in the engine swaps available due to maybe size constraints between the two?
and what's a feasible amount of power to expect?
I'm willing to invest the time and money into it to make it what I want

I've heard of people doing camry sourced V-6's
Would that upset the balance of the car?
or would that be more time and money than it's worth?
right now I'm just playing with ideas nothing is even set yet
So I'm just curious with the possibilities

There are some threads here covering that swap into a 2nd gen, . It's costly , and a very tight fit, with alot of fabrication.
I don't know about doing that with a 1st gen.
I may do that someday, but I would really like to drop a small block V8 in a 2nd gen.
But anyway, the 3sgte has a huge after market support and you can easily get into the
300+hp range

Not sure if thats true, but thats possible since the 3sgte has an iron block.- especially if the 1mz-fe has an aluminum block.

I've seen j-spec 3sgte's that stock put out 245 hp all over the internet. That's prolly the way to go if you wanna balance between budget and power.

Some of the USDM and JDM parts are interchangeable, and some are not. And some parts will be difficult-and expensive to locate. You might wanna consider that in your decision. You can easily match or exceed the power of the stock JDM 3sgte just by following the MR2 Power Primer.
If you do a search, you will find a few posts from people trying to locate parts.
I would not go the JDM route because of those issues.but thats just me

yea you can go with a gen 3 3sgte and they take to mods alot better but like he said finding some parts for them if they break can be a bit tricky. But you can put any motor into anything. Just takes time and money. I know of a couple people that have done a v8 northstar motor into the MK1 with alot of fab work.
