questions about an '85 MR2

hey everyone, haven't been on here in a long time... I'm debating on whether i should buy an '85 MR2... it's orange with the black spoiler, non-turbo, and has 92,000 original miles... the guy was asking 3500 and i got him down to 2800... has a/c and upgraded stereo, and a high performance clutch... the paint is kinda faded, a lil dent on the rear driver's side corner, and multiple rock chips on the hood...

i'm debating on buying it, or whether i should get a honda crx (hard to find one in good condition), or a civic (93-2000, unmolested with low miles in good condition), again, hard to find...

so, what do ya guys think... is the mr2 worth the price??

i also really need to know the gas mileage on it, as i will be doing a lot of highway driving... i wanna know it's gas mileage on the highway, and in town... like if i were to do nothing but highway, what would it be??

see, i have a '91 corolla with the 1.6L 4afe in it and it's said to get 23-25 (city) and 27-28 (highway) with the 3-speed w/overdrive... i actually get mid-upper 20's city and up to 40 on the highway doing 65-70, and sometimes an average of 33-35 if doing a lot of highway and some city driving...

any answers to my questions are greatly appreciated

btw i'm in california if that matters (smog shit)

the MR2 is overpriced.... you can probably find one in better shape for 1/2 the price.

typically AW11's running in good condition can get around 25 in the city and upwards of 30 on the highway... all depends on how you drive it.....

I have to say I'd take the MR2. I'm partial to RWD, and that's a huge reason I have mine. 2800 isn't bad in good condition with that mileage. You can easily resell for that price.

At the last Autocross, the mid-engined cars were rocking! We had a bone stock 85 with just suspension work outrun a Porsche Boxster, 911's and a 944 turbo. I had the fastest time of the day in mine, but that was cause of my enigne swap, not so much driver skill (the bone stock MKI was right on my tail.

Having said that, it's the agility of this car that's just amazing. Once you learn the car, you'll love it! I've owned Porsches and a couple other sports cars before, and I just love my MR2.

USA Retails for $1500

My wife totalled her 87 Normally Aspirated Mark 1 last year and we found out the car's Blue Book value is $1500 in "perfect" shape. Your "dent" will cost $100 minimum and possibly much more if you do not do the work yourself.

This 24 year old car will requiure extensive diagnosis and repairs on a regular basis,, and you should be ready and able to perform this work.. The 92,000 is probably a big lie, the highlighted "clutch" indicates this person beats this car, the "faded" paint indicates poor upkeep and undoubtedly poor maintenance, if any?

This car gets 32-35 mpg, it handles better than that Corolla SEEdan of yours and parts are somewhat available at reasonable prices.

Many parts from your 4a engine in the corolla will interchange with the 4a series engine in this car, and that's a plus as a owner.

I've owned 85-89 Mr2's since 1989, if you'd like further discussions on this purchase feel free to write, I'm retired and have lots of time to race and talk.

I'm also your parts connection

Good luck and good hunting,
