What gen MR2? Yeah, you can use a crow bar and f*ck it up some more. But I don't really think you wanna do that. That would cause alot of damage.
The only thing I can think of is to open the engine compartment and see if you can slide a long, slim metal rod thru the backside of the trunk lid between the lid and body thru the rubber seal and see if you can manipulate the latch that way..
It'll be difficult, but not impossible.
Other than that I don't see any other way to get it open without the cable being connected.(besides the crow bar)
Good Luck!

If you've got the old latch mechanism, Maybe you can figure out where to drill a small hole in the car to enable you to manipulate the latch with a small screw driver or wire. Do not take a crow bar to this car.

OK I’ve checked my 87 out. Looks like if you drill a 1/4" hole dead center of the car in between the top of the number plate and lip of the trunk in the valley in the plastic trim. Drill through the body then through the bracket that the latch is mounted you can probably trip the latch with a screw driver.

USA Hold that crow bar!!

It might be better if you went thru the trunk floor in lieu of what that lever is going to do to the visible parts and your trunk may not align, and your trunk may have further problems down the road with the lock etc etc.

When this happened to me, I sawed of one of the hinges. I have tons of parts so it was not a problem to replace 1 hinge.
