The fans turn on when they sense engine is getting above nominal temperature.. Usualy after the engine is warmed up and the car is idleing.
After the engine is warmed up, let it idle and see if you hear the fans kick on.

Before you over heated, when was the last time you serviced the cooling system?

Heres a diagram of it's location, but it's not what causing you to overheat.
At some point at idle, the fans should kick on.Does the temp go down when the car is moving?
Does it just overheat when idleing for awhile?

yea the thermostat for the 91 mr2 n/a is located on the right side of the oil filter and headers..
when its on idle it dosent overheat but it does get warm really fast. and when i start driving for like 1/2 mile or less it starts overheating so i have to put it back on neautral for it wont overheat while its moving

Get a bolt extractor and check your thermostat. Sears sells a good bolt extractor kit for around $12.00

try a new thermostat but it's probably the head gasket on it's way out and probably at the #4 cylinder. Do a compression test.
