Regarding Climate Control System

I just broke the climate control system inside my car. I shifted the lever from cool to hot and it got stuck in the hot position. When I tried returning the lever back to the cool position it wouldn't budge. As I tried to force it back the plastic cap popped off and the level seems to be jammed/broken.

Are there are any options for me to fix this or am I going to have to buy another ac control unit? If I have to buy one, is it possible for me to buy an aftermarket unit?

Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Its a 1991 Turbo. The lever is stuck in the hot position. Can't get it to move back and when I tried forcing it the plastic piece broke off. So I basically have a metal looking fork coming out. The unit works fine, just the lever is bad...was hoping I could fix this somehow.

Any help is appreciated and thanks for the reply.

Same year and same problem as mine.
When I slide the temp selector, I have to slightly pull the knob outwards to get it to slide in either direction.
I pulled the unit out and greased the joint of that control, but it didn't make much difference.
I'm not aware of an aftermarket replacement-just the OEM from the dealer.
I guess you can get another knob and try what I do. It 's been working for me.
The dealer wants $720.00 for the unit!

if i remember correctly they are cable operated... to a mechanical heater valve.

your "control unit" isn't bad... bent cable or the heater valve is binding.

You inadvertantly forgot to mention what year this car was?

Ahh..that's kinda real important in case your unaware of that.

I have pictures of the TEMPERATURE CONTROL MODULE and availability for the 1985-86 and the revised 1987-89 for the Mark 1 series car.

Contact me privately for details by leaving a email address only.

Thank You

There are some automatic climate control units up for auction on ebay. I have the same problem on my '91 SW21, but I don't have the auto unit. I'm not sure if this unit drops into the wiring harness or not. The ebay units are going for way less than for $100.

Have you changed the switch of the A/C? Maybe some problems with the A/C shift lever.

No, I haven't altered the switch for my a/c, although I did just have a new compressor installed... I'll probably MacGuyver the damn thing anyway.

This happens all the time on these climate controls. I've broken two of them. As mentioned above, you should be able to get it to slide by putting some pressure in the opposite direction at the same time you push it... it's hard to explain but keep playing and you'll figure it out.

I've got instructions for fixing it somewhere....

Thats what I was trying to explain. I do that and I'm able to slide it in either direction.
I did take the unit out at 1st. It binds in the back at a pivotal spot. I tried to bend it where it would not bind, but could only bend it alittle before I thought it might break. I put a little lithium grease and I am able to use it using the method Ghosty and I described.
Ben, if you have a way to really fix it, please post it.It would be greatly appreciated.

From mr2oc, you'll need a (free) membership...

There used to be pictures but I guess they aren't up any more.

I'll see if I bookmarked the other place I saw it when I get home... hitting the junkyard first.

^^^ Thanks! I think that was the thread I was looking for earlier. I'll be trying that on my spare climate control before I do the LEDs in it.
