exhaust questions

I have an 87 mr2 with a summit muffler and 2 1/2 inch tip. i want to take out the cat. would this be a bad idea? also what would make it sound louder? i dont want it to be ridiculous. . .just a low rumble. any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

If you have to pass an emissions test, it's a bad idea. There wouldn't be much of a difference in the sound either.
If you just want a better, deeper tone, a quality cat back is the way to go.

I had a Pacesetter exhaust and a gutted cat on my 85. It was very very loud, but it quieted down at about 85 MPH. Now I have a stock exhaust with a gutted cat and it's probably louder than stock due to the gutted cat, buts it's not too loud. I got tired of the really loud exhaust and drove it that way for many years.

well i live in FL so we dont have emissions test anymore. on other websites i keep getting told to gut the cat. as of now the car sounds just a little tiny bit louder and deeper than a stock muffler. my old muffler had a crack so this is a huge improvement. i think im going to gut the cat, but i want to know if just a straight pipe will work? my friend who worked my exhaust said that he thought it would be a loss of power but he isnt an mr2 specialist. . .is he correct? thanks!

Performance guildines apply to all cars, Not just MR2's... You will loose power, But you probably won't even notice.

Even a 500.00 performance exhaust setup on a stock engine... most likely loose 3-5 HP...

Sound wise...? The best ones are the expensive ones... thats why they are expensive

Your converter

If your converter is older it's probably junk anyway. You might have a substitute tube made (by muffler co.)and swap the tube for the converter.(they bolt in and out)

You might consider going straight back without any OEM bending of the exhaust stream when performing the above swap. The shorter the system the louder it may be, it is for me.
