1988 supercharged mr2 transmission a long time coming!!!!!

thanks to anyone who would like to address the transmission hang up that my white 1988 has. not to end a sentence in a verb!!! i am the 2nd owner of this toyota, it is all original with 28,000 miles and was the featured car at hightower toyota in la crescenta ca, outside glendale california. since 1988 it has seen few miles as the owners were an older couple and their interest lie mainly in their continental Clenet that they purchased in 1978 to use as a show car in many parades, especially the hollywood christmas parade. so this beautiful original sat in their garage until 1988 when they gave it to me as a present. it was incredible as i had worshiped this mr2 as gold in 1988 and now i owned it and it was like new!! what luck.
the transmission is very funny. it is the automatic with overdrive, all original. when the mr2 hits the road the car won't go into it lowest gear for miles. it could be up to 10 miles or more before it decides to drop into the lowest low. so here i am running at 4000 rpm for a great distance using up all kinds of gas and in general being a traffic slug. such embarrassment for me and the car. i am being tailgated by everyone and stuck in third gear. i need advise!!!! when the transmission finally downshifts into fourth it runs like the space shuttle and never looks back. in the meantime, it has been the biggest pain in the ass waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting!
please help, do i need AAMCO or can i count on you expeerts to set me free. please post THANKS

more MR2 help needed

thanks for the tip on checking the transmission for fluid, i will try that immediately. can that be done with the engine cold. what exactly is the proper procedure? further, is it true that if an 1988 is raised by a lift that it will be a simple procedure to change the oil filter, as i practically dislocated my entire body trying to wedge my hand and wrist behind the engine in an attempt to do it yourself!

Mr McCleaery

I have taken pictures of the 89 Service Manual sections relavent to doing a check on the Auto Tranny to include how to read the AT ECT Comuter when I was helping another mr2 owner several months ago.

Although I am new to this forum I believe you may leave a email address at my mailbox here (mr2tim).

I will send this procedure to you and field any inquiries you may have on this procedure although it's fairly basic operations.
