Hard Steering

I figure I have some worn out parts, or maybe lack of lubrication, but I wanted to know what you guys think.

My 86 MR2 is very hard to steer when stopped or moving slow. It feels in comparison to a car that used to have power steering but it went out. Any ideas of what could be worn out or need adjusted? It has factory sized tires and springs. Nothing is aftermarket on it.

side note, whats with the motion sensor alarm that comes on the MR2? I thought this car had a aftermarket alarm on it, but when I moved the drivers seat back I saw the big "Toyota Motion Sensor" box. I got the car without any kind of keychain. BTW, im a noob to the MK1 MR2.

Thanks, Nate

Nate,
This is no power steering for MKI and early MKII. Yes, the steering will be hard when you are not moving or moving slow. You are not supposed to steer when the car is not in motion. You will get used to it.

How are your tires? I noticed when I first got my 2 it was REALLY hard to steer, and the tires were crap. When I got my new tires put on it made it a lot easier. Just a thought.

No problem.

If you feel that your ride is a tad bit too hard on turns/corners, do check up on the bushings on the car. My 88 Supercharged MR2 has a problem with steering especially on corners when I'm going a bit fast.

My car has been lowered and running on 16" Toyo Proxies. The suspension is really tight. Apparantly, my car hugs the road so I get a lot of bump steer but it seems as if its my bushings and control arm which needed attention.

If you do need bushings, I recommend the High'n'Tight Motor Sports polyurethane bushings. The bushings have been specifically designed by an MR2 enthusiast (Sarge) so you can trust his products 110%. Check em out. http://www.highandtight.com
