I rebuilt my engine 12K miles ago. Last week it was running rough so I checked the timing. It was way off. I tried to reset timing and it just wouldn't. So I checked timing belt. The tensioner was bad , so I replaced it, and the belt, realigned cams/crank and it runs very well.
But-After the engine warms up, I get white smoke from the exhaust-but only sfter it warms up and only at idle!!!? When I come to a stop, it takes about 30 seconds for the smoke to reappear.
I've done a compression check-numbers are good with the lowest being 189 and the highest-191 (I'm running 9:0/1 CR JE forged pistons pistons .040 over) thats why the higher psi. I Also checked the spark plugs, they are clean, but the tips are white. What would that indicate?
No oil in coolant and no coolant in oil. I replaced the O2 sensor.
the plug wires (OEM's), new cap, rotor a few weeks ago .(all before this started). I haven't had any heating issues either.
I'm at a loss as to the problem.
Any ideas?
Checked my oil. There doesn't seem to be any excess usage. Burning oil smoke is usually blueish too.I would also think the plug tip would be black and not white. I'm thinking maybe coolant maybe entering the chamber. I'm hoping it's not the headgasket, but I would think the compression test would have revealed that.
I'm leaning towards valve seals, but usually with leaky valve seals, the smoking will usually slows down as the engine heats up and the heat expands the seal. I'm not getting smoke till the engine heats up. Which is several minutes after starting.
if u did the compression test and it pass than is not the gaskets, my friend is having the same problem turn off ur car for 10 mins than turn it on, accelarate it really hard if smokes come out its the seals, it happen once in awhile, my friend had the same problem on his car
check your turbo piping that goes back up to the intake....the seal in the turbo may have started to go and it is now throwing oil back into your intake....happened with a friends 91 eagle talon.....that would explain a slow oil leak ...it explains that your compression test is good...and it explains y it only happens at idle....under load of driving the oil is being burnt faster than it leaks... check it out lemme know
This post is almost 1 month old and the Turbo was my 1st thought too.
I woulda been really mad too because the turbo(CT27) is almost new with only 12K miles on it.
Problem already solved. Kinked PCV hose.,
Thanks anyway though.
typically white tips on the spark plugs means you are running lean or too hot. or you have the wrong heat range plugs. What type are you running and how old are they

Yup, that is usually what white pulgs means.
The white smoke usully means coolant in the combustion chamber. I'd re-do the compression test. Head gasket is still the #1 suspect I think. Or somthing that allows coolant into the combustion chamber.
If it were oil in the combustion chamber the smoke would be blueish-grey. If the smoke was black, it's incomplete combustion and you get black plugs.

Actually, as stated above, after changing my PCV hose, the smoke has stopped.
Tips are still white.I suspect a lean fuel mix too. Though I didn't think the CT27 could out run the stock fuel system. I think I'll check fuel pressure.
Oh, I missed that the smoking stopped. As TheEngineer said, a little white/grey is OK.
