Gen1 Alternator?

89 na manual trans. Rained really hard one day. drove down the street. everytime the engine revved, i had all sorts of warning lights on the dash. i smelled an electrical burning smell. i am thinking alternator. i took the alternator to auto zone and the machine would'nt spin it at all. everytime they plug the wires in it would'nt read anything. am i right in thinking it is the alternator? anything else i should be aware of?
also, is anyone else having problems with water in your engine bay? everytime after it rains, my belt sqeals for a few seconds. and i am wandering if there is a way to cover the holes in the engine lid without effecting cooling. like a reverse engine scoop or something. any ideas?

"Wouldn't spin it", seized bearing you mean?
Probably chewed up your belt then.
Check your belt tensioner pulley as well.

It will spin, but the machine stopped before it would spin it. It would not hook up correctly so the machine would not begin to spin.

The test machine must have detected an internal fault.
Up close, does the alternator have a burnt smell.
Could be causing a high load on your belt.
Output should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts dc (higher at colder temp).
But wait for more learned opinions.
I have repaired GM alternators, but never tore apart a Toyota one.
Most common failures on older models were worn brushes, a cheap fix.

If you have not already tried this....
Try removing the cable from the negative battery post.
Wait 5 minutes then reconnect.
This hopefully may reset this problem.
Edit:

Wiring diagram shows a wiper relay, possibly in fuse panel.

Try tapping on it, may be sticking or need replacing.

Sorry to mislead. forget reset advice
Could be switch or relay.
look at links to locate relay
Pull relay out, wipers should stop

Gen1 Wipers & water

Glad to see you resolved the alternator problem. Did you know your belt squeeling and the alternator problem are from the same mis-engineered vent location in the engine cover on the N/A cars?

Yep, peer down the pass side engine cover vent and look and see where the water goes goes.

Now consider that the N/A cars (which are different than the S/C cars) have a voltage regulator also stuck in the alternator housing and presto, an electrical nightmare on elm street.

This kind of engineering is why America won World War 2.

I've added fiberglass diverters on the bottom of the engine cover to resolve this problem. PM me with a email address and I'll sent some pictures of this super easy cure.

Ah.. kind of curious how your wiper "thing" worked out for you, other than just killing the wipers all together?
