Question transmission question?

ok im am getting ready to make a deal on a 1991 MR2 NA that has a heart transplant (us spec 3sgte). now my question is what is the are the differences betweent he NA tranmission and the Turbo tranmission. the car currently has the stock NA tranny in it and was wondering if that should be one of the first things i should look into swapping out or should i not worry about it. the reason i ask is because im and going to be shooting for 350-375rwhp. ive been being a troll for the past few weeks just reading and searching to find out as much info as i can. what kinda expectations should i be warned about before i learn 1st hand the hard way. i am coming for a 328awhp impreza wrx so i know i can build a 350rwhp car. thanks for the help and advice anyone can give me.

later
ryan

most ppls that do the swap...also swap the turbo tranny also...i dont think the NA tranny will work with 3SGTE....different gearing and ratios....a LSD would be nice if ur aiming for 350+rwhp range and an upgraded clutch (six puck or twin disc)....

why dont you think that the 2 trannys are interchagable? i believe that there are 2 members on this forum that have done it. how are the 2 transmissions different (i.e. stronger, whcih one has the shorter gears. from what ive been reading i diddnt think that most turbo trannys came with the lsd already equipped. what brand of aftermarket would you recommend? i was thinking about the the kazz unit or the trd one. neither of which have a listing for the non-turbo tranmission. how exactly can i tell visuallly if its the trurbo transmission or the non-turbo?

thanks
ryan

different motors...use different trannies....thats how i'm basing my answer upon....93+ came with lsd as a factory option....do u really think the stock na tranny could even handle 200hp??...

and even when u do the 3SGTE swap..u'll still need drive axles/hubs/shifter cables to complete the swap.....prolly even the rear brakes too bc turbo brakes are bigger....

Hi, I don't want to compromize your talk but i have a j-spec 3sgte with a n/a tranny on. Because i bought the car n/a and swapped the celica awd 3sgte with my n/a tranny. And no you doesn't have to change shifter cables and axles.

But one thing i tell you it's that the n/a tranny ain't as tough as the 3sgte one. Mine if geting dead real soon ( one year) so i think changing it for a turbo one.

But to answer MRQTurbo: yes a n/a one can handle boost of 200hp and even more.... (275)

And by the way, if your n/a tranny is OK when you buy the car just go in peace in wait till something wrong happen, if it happens...

hahaha i am assuming that this is only a toyota thing. im coming for subaru family like i recently stated so from experience i know that any ej series tranny will directly bolt up to any ej series engine. if you dont believe me ask any subaru gear heads. i know that this is also true on honda. any b series engine (b16a1, b16a2, b16a3, b18c1, b18c5, b20) will bolt upto any b series tranny as long as they are the same type (cable to cable or hydrolic to hydrolic). the same goes for the D series and the h series engines in the honda line up. as for my experience in any other types of car are dsm's which all bolt up to eachother 4g63 engines all bolt up to the 4g61 trannys (old mirage and colt turbo's). i dont know where you are getting your info mrqturbo but you may wanna check into stuff before saying stuff just wont work. i mean if toyota only made certain parts only for the mr2 turbo than it wouldve been a limited production car.

oh yeah as far as a tranny not being able to hold 200hp. thats pretty lame maybe i should change my mind and just stick to subarus since im pushing over 400bhp on my stock tranny and stock clutch both with over 70k on them. are mr2's and toyota's made that poorly that a transmission cant handle a 50 hp increase from their stock form ?

LOL you are comparing honda and toyota. Toyota supra 6spd tranny will bolt right up to the 5spd sc300 tranny.
