I know I know another noob on the forum, get used to it.
Any ways Hey Yall I'm Paul but people call me Walnuts for no reason other then the sopranos and I'm Italian. I was looking at a local 92 mr2 turbo in rough condition but they only want 2,000 for it and it has no rust. Few problems with it that you all can probably help me out with. First off when I took it for the test drive it idled real rough at first at around 500-600 rpms and shuddered just overall rough idle, after driving it for a while tho that stopped. another thing it was sluggish granted I went from driving a 220whp Honda Del sol to driving the mr2 it just didn't feel like it had any pep, floored it in first didn't even chirp the tires. It has 195,000 miles on it so I'm guessing the turbo is just getting tired. It spooled up fine atleast it sounded like it while just driving normal and would blow off just like it should. Another thing is it makes a weird clunking sound while turning hard. CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK, from my research it looks to be ball joints?!?
Also the driver side vent/scoop and side skirt are hit on the bottom looks like a tire exploded and did some damage bending up the scoop and the side skirt and it's has some surface rust, looks like I can just get aftermarket vents and a side skirt and fix that problem correct? And for one of the last problems, It would stay running while turning the key one turn to the left and sounds like a fan would turn on while all the dash and everything went dead didnt register any rpms or any thing I thought that was kind of odd. And it's not a turbo timer because it would turn off if I turned it one more time and took the key out. If yall could help me out on some of these issues that would be great. I know how these cars can be a pita to work on and I don't want to trade my perfectly running civic for something that is going to cost a couple grand to get running reasonable.
500-600 RPM's at idle is too low. 800-850 is nominal.
Also, the turbo for this car needs to be warmed up before pushing it AT ALL. Or it will bog down.
As far as the clunk noise, could be anything in the front. Ball joints is a good starting point to start your trouble shooting.
The vent is as you said-an easy fix.
These cars are old. You Will have to pump some money into it.-especially from your description.
If you're not willing to shell out 2K to bring it up to specs, I would steer away from it.

Oh, Welcome to ToyotaNation
I drove it around for a good ten minutes before I got on it. May still have been to cold it was less then 32 degrees out. I'm fine and dandy with shelling out 2 grand over a course of time I just don't have that money up front at the moment. Any idea what the weird fan thing would be with the accessory mode?
If the temperature sensor on the underside of the engine lid has been disconnected, the Intercooler fan will stay on. I'm assuming you meant the fan sound was coming from the back.

Funny you should mention that, I did not notice the temp gauge go up just blamed it on the cold weather, is there a reason why this would be unplugged? Also the motor stayed running with it, and the fan was not on while it was the key was in the on (far right) positions.
The temp sensor I mentioned is for the engine bay temperature. it tells the intercooler fan when to kick on. If it's unplugged, the intercooler fan runs continuously as long as the ignition is on. Alot of us unplug the sensor to avoid heatsoak.
Don't know about the temperature gauge. The sending unit may have failed-or the gauge itself. Or maybe like you said, it's just the cold weather.

Oh alright, I did notice that it only came on in the accessory key position and was loud as hell. Sounded like my head was right next to the fan.

I put an aftermarket spal fan on my IC and wired it to always be on. It is pretty loud. I just assumed it was because I have ripped out all the sound deadener and the interior. Maybe its all mr2's lol

i know nothing about mr2's other then what I have read online (which isn't much lol) I need to track down interiour pieces also. Any one know were to buy random plastics on the inside? Door handles, radio bezel/block off plate, driver side tweeter with panel. Also is there any way to bolt up some racing seats pretty easy with common brackets? I'm looking at sparco buckets.
Yeah, I have a 9" Spal on my IC . I have my sensor disconnected. I can hear my fan quite easily and my exhaust is loud. (louder than I'd like)
So it's not weird to hear that noise? I will peak around it a little bit more on Monday and see if I can take it to my friends shop close by and put it up on the lift. get a few pictures for you guys.

It's really hard to diagnose a "noise" over the internet. Take pics of where you think it's coming from.
the quality sucks, put the camera to close to the exhaust, and yeah, its a crappy digi cam haha. anyway, that "whine" is the fan on the intercooler
edit: i just put a linky, not sure where the embedded thing came from, i can add a space in the middle if there is any problems, or a mod can, i dont want to break any rules.
