Advice?

So after pretty much giving up on my dream to own a mr2 because i couldn't find one for me, i finally find the perfect one. The very mr2 that made me fall in love as I saw it in a friends garage and now he's offering to sell it for me for only 1,800. The only thing that keeps me from coughing up the cash right right now is it has 190K mileage. I know for a fact he has taken very good care of it but how long would the car last before it starts to give me problems? How long do mr2s usually last? Should I buy it???

Turbo or non turbo?
In my opinion, the biggest concern for the turbo model with that many miles would be the seals in the turbo.
As for the N/A model, a well taken care of 5sfe can go several hundred thousand miles.

Just remember, even a '95 MR2 is going on 15 years old. Expect to have to do some work .
They are, after all, just a machine.

It all depends on the individual car. Personally, I'd probably buy it at that price if it's in decent shape.

Turbo or NA? If it's NA, it's a good deal. If it's turbo, it's a great deal (assuming, again, that it's in decent shape).

Any pics?

I agree with Ghosty, which ever model it is, if it's runs decently, it's a pretty good deal.

I bought mine with 168k miles on it, and in rough shape. (not maintained, been in a couple fender benders, and NEVER emissioned as it was owned on a reservation) it was N/A and lasted over a year before it developed problems that I needed a mechanic for, idk how much it would of been, I just opted to do the turbo swap then cuz I had the money.

Its an N/A and I know for a fact its well taken care of but since it is an old car I know I'm going to have to care of it. I plan on engine swapping for the 3sgte eventually but not for awhile.

My questions are around how much should I expect to pay just to maintain it and should it be fairly easy to maintain myself or am I gonna have take it to a mechanic.

As you can tell this is my first mr2 so not much experience with them although I've been doing plenty of research. Thanks for the help though

There's no way to tell you how much it's gonna cost to maintain it. Depends on what goes wrong or if anything goes wrong at all.The 5sfe is a pretty dependable engine. They don't require anymore maintainance than any other N/A engine.
As far as you doing the work yourself, that all depends on your mechanical skills and what tools you have.
It's cramped in there, but so are many engines bays these days.

Adding to the above info (and repeating some of it)....

- the 5SFE is nigh-on bulletproof. Don't bother trying to make it more powerful, just keep it maintained. That means you should change the oil and spark plugs immediately. I'd do a compression test also. Then, leave it be. The engine should last for a long time.

- the MR2 bay is certainly cramped, but it's not that bad to work on once you figure out where everything is. There's no comparison to a truck's engine bay, but it's not as bad as people would lead you to believe.

- your maintenance costs will be in body/suspension items. Make sure the suspension and brakes are solid and then enjoy the hell out of the car.

Thanks for all the help, I am planning to buy the car. Hopefully everything goes fine but it'll be learning experience for me. Thanks again!
