Hello everyone, I'm a relatively new member on these boards, and i've posted about 4runners, but a friend of mine at school just bought a 1986 MR2 gt (i think that's the model)for 1,600 bux. I was suprised that it had a rear or mid-engined drive train, and he also said it had racing suspension and he's always zipping aorund in the thing. And he said it made a fellow student with an 87 supra jealous because the MR2 is so much more agile...
The part that made me want the car even more was it's speedy look, and it's engine...which sounded great. I haven't heard to many nice sounding engines yet, but to hear a non-fartpipe exaust scream when he revved it was awsome, i loved it. And now i'm torn between searching for a 4 runner and an MR2. Or maybe some other toyota model?? I don't know what kind of car i want i can't figure it out! Can someone poast about some good cars to look for or maybe if an MR2 is a good first car, or should i stick to 4 runner?? I can't decide there are so many pros and some cons to each type of yota!!
I've read several things about it having really speedy go-kart style handling, and the 2nd generation has blistring quick speed that throws you back in your seat... but which generation should i look for if i were to get one?? I like how the Mk2 has 200hp, but i would like the older one's feel for the road and agility.
The handling on the mk2 is great. All MR2's have excellent handling, no matter what generation you get. I test drove a MRS, it was a little too gutless for me. I liked the VVTI, but I would rather have the MK2. You can get the mk2 with the VVTI, but you have to spend some $$$$$$$$$.
I have a 1993 MR2 Turbo (my weekend car), 1996 4-Runner 4wd (family car.wife's car), and a 1998 Tacoma 4wd(my truck). They are all great in there own way.
But you really can't compare these vehicles because it is like comparing apples to oranges. You have to decide what is important to you and then your decision will be easy.

My friend told me that the headlights can pop up without turning on (and showed me) and said that that is for slowing the car down when racing, which slows the car 5mph a second??!!
If this is true, then do other vehicles like RX7's and hondas with flip ups have this feature, or ability also??
I was also curiouis, if anyone here knows of another car as nice as the 1st generation MR2 such as an RX7??

thanks for making my day! i think that has to be one of the funniest things i have ever heard. lmao. sounds like your friend is full of it.
Ok, i think he was telling some truth, because he SHOWED ME. He pulled the lever to the left of the wheel bact toward where the driver would be sitting, and the lights popped up and after a few seconds they went back down, by themselves, and either he's totally telling the truth, someone rigged them just for giving people bs, or they have some other function.Somebody please explain this to me...
I have one more question about what year i should look for, and if the supercharged MR2's are really much better or worth tracking down, cause i've seen a few and i have my eye on a black one that's only 3,000...is that a good price for this kind of car or what??..
I've also heard many different views on the MR2 and how funt hey are, but are there any other cars that can compare?? I think the Mazda RX7 is very similar, but are there any as fun and agile as the MR2??
That little bar is called the high-beams. When your lights are down, it puts them up and puts your high-beams on. I guess it 'could' slow the car down.... but I doubt 5mph/sec. Who knows though. You should be able to get and SC MR2 for somewhere between 2k - 3k.

TRUST me, your friend is talking out of his ass. The pop up headlights ARE NOT to slow the car down. and yes when you pull the lever back the highbeams come on so they pop up and then go back down. the 1st gens are fun cars but under powere. I would get a 91up turbo if you want fun and power. Tell your friend to stop making crap up. Its people like him that mislead so many innocent beginning tuners.
