Just bought a mr2 and have catalytic converter trouble HELP!!

i have just bought a 1993 toyota mr2 3SGTE Gen 2, and while im driving a warning light comes up it looks like a rectangle with two pipes coming out of it and steam coming from the top, i think its the catalytic converter over heating?? not sure. any help would be appreciated and how to fix the problem, i think if it is the converter than dthe engine is running too rich and excess fuel is igniting in the converter, or its not sparking properly.

There isn't a dash light for the catylictic converter. Sounds like the battery light. A pic would help.
What exactly is the problem you're experiencing?

i experienced the car as if it had too much petrol it felt sluggish and had no power, i then stopped it and it was right again, there is a dummy light on my dash that has a rectangle and two pipes coming out of each side with steam coming off the top, im currently at work so i cant photograph it, but i read on another forum that it was only for the japanese imports and it meant the cat was geting hot. i may be wrong but im just not sure. im taking it in, in a few days but any help to help out my mechanic would be great. thanks
