1987 MR2 Starting Probs

Hi,

help please.

One of my neighbours has a 1987 MR2 and has problems starting when its cold or wet. Starts ok when dry and reasonably warm.
He has checked out his leads and plugs etc and says they are fine.

After a bit of searching on here I wondered if it could be something called the "solenoid resistor", personally I've never heard of such a thing.
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me where this solenoid is so that we can check it out, a photo would be great as I haven't even looked under the cover yet.

I feel its probably some connections need cleaning but would like to start with solutions people have already had success with.

Cheers, nev

Hi Nev,Don't really know exactly what the solenoid (risister) is but if the engine turns it's nothing to do with the solenoid. Take it your in the UK? I came from Yorkshire 20+ years ago. This sounds like the good old English damp. Replace the plugs, Distributor rotor, cap and leads. These things are cheap and simple and always improve things. Looking at them and saying there fine means nothing if you don't know what your looking for. All other causes are way out in left field.Geoff

The resistor is located near the coil. It's the tiny aluminum casting with parallel fins on it.

What your discribing is more like a cold start injector system failure.

Write me a plandcs@aol.com if you need further checkout info.
