Question Smoking 91' MR2 Turbo!?!

Hey guys!

I am going to look at a 1991 MR2 Turbo with 110,000 miles on it... it has a smoking problem and yeah, here is my question(s):

What could be the problem, what should I look for? Oil? Not coolant right? Where could be problem areas? It has a j-spec ceramic CT-26 turbo on it. Can you guys please give me suggestions/ideas/places to look where the problem might be, as well as an estimate on how expensive it might be to fix.

Thanks in advance!

Brandon Mendez

look for any noticeable oil leaks around the turbo....sounds like the seals could be going....blowing smoke is not a good sign....do a compression test on the engine itself to determine the health of it...take it to a mechanic that u trust....

I know what you are thinking...

I'm gonna assume its an oil related leak.

When oil is 'combusted' or more of 'processed' through the engine and gunks all my ignition related componets, heh, would a blue cloud be emitted from the muffler? I can't rember what color means what! Doh, feel like such a noob! Also if it smells... if I can rember correctly, it can mean certian things such as gaskets/etc are going/gone as well.

Well, I am planning to find out everything later today when I go and check it out. I would also like to do a thorough (sp?) 'turbo check' with a feeler gauge and all, to check for any 'play' or movement, and evaluate the amount of life left in that J-Spec snail - hopefully alot!

I really hope this whole deal works out and the car is in as good of condition as is it could be for having 110k miles on it. I will just have to wait and see for myself.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!

Compression test yeilded proper pressure in all four cylinders. Seals on the turbo I assume is what you ment, correct?

Well, it has JE Pistons, ARP studs in the head, basically a built motor, has the type-s bov, yet it is not included with the sale. Same with the Racing Hart 3-Piece wheels, not included for the $3800usd price, yet he will include them for $900 more. It has the Tanabe G-Power Medallion exhaust which sounded nice. I couldn't tell the color of the exhaust cause it was dark out, so I am going to check it out again...

the car has a built motor but yet still running the puny stock ct-26....sounds like the turbo is going....n perfect time for u to upgrade to a bigger turbo....the motor should be able to handle higher boost with upgraded pistons.....

When I asked him if he cleaned the intercooler out when they did the turbo swap he sounded really hesitant to anwser, and to make a long story short it basically it sounded like it had not been done. (They had swaped from the usdm turbo to the jdm turbo with ceramic turbine-fins, when the usdm one died during a street race.) So do you think that it might just be residual-shit/metal shavings/etc that is caught in the intercooler that might be fucking everything over now? What about rings, you think that might be the smoking-culprit after having 'who-knows-what' get 'processed' through the engine???

I don't know if it is worth it or not, what do you think MRQturbo? It has ugly blue interior... but I don't really care, the A/C is not connected/possibly not working, and I live in hotter then hell AZ. Its missing the antenna and has some small scratches and dents, I guess I will just have to see it during the day today. Ergh.

smoking and smells and everything. i think you should just keep away. unless you have lots of money and want to fix up all the minor work i suggest you get a stock one like rollhard said. if its smoking and the smoke is white than that means you have bad piston rings or the cyclinders are burning oil somehow. if the somles are black or dark it can mean that the car is just too rich.. as him about all the upgrades on fuel, etc.
...... oh another thing is that theres nothing wrong with having a stock turbo. i just broke in to the 12s on the 1/4 with my stock ct26.

arcasmachine.......do u know if the owner of the car is on the main mr2 board....what is his username??.....

the cost of replacing the turbo will depend on what one u decide on...but it does sound like the turbo will need replacing soon...bc compression numbers are consistent across as u say....what r the compression numbers??....

Oh yeah, sorry, heh, I am not planing on getting it. It just had too many things wrong with it when we took it for a test drive yesterday. (Prozaq & I (from TN and the MR2 boards) The type s bov did sound rather dope, and the engine pulled like a mofo, but no powersteering, no a/c, no yadda yadda yadda... and I was just, ugh. Nah. It was a good deal for what it was, but its not for me, I don't want a beat on 'project car.'

Anyways, the owner of the MR2 is also the owner of Intense Motorsports. I'm sure he browses multiple boards, althought I am not sure if he is signed up on the MR2OC?

Well, thanks for you time and comments guys... now the hunting continues!
