i have had my 1989 mr2.2.0gt for 2yrs,during which time it has had 3brand new bosch alternators, and several batteries. It seems to be when it rains that it starts overcharging and/or undercharging.it can appear to be charging normally, then after being parked up for a few hours the battery is totally drained, not even dash lights coming on.it can be jumpstarted no problem tho..i dont know how it can be drawing power when its off.
can anyone offer any insight/cause/solution on this at all?
bosch alternator is the problem. go with Toyota. refurbished is better than new bosch. also, you have a 2.0l MkI? please also check to see if your alternator is oily or if water is dripping directly onto it. also, do you still have the plastic cover on the bottom?

doesn't make a difference wether it's a toyota, denso, bosche, or proline. The water pools and dumps on the alt. Had a ton of em blow, I prefer the lifetime warranty myself, went through 1-2 a year until I made a sheet metal heat shield outta some scrap, haven't had a problem since. Got the idea from a buddy with a mk2 and I was like, woa that's a great idea. He was like yeah, got it with the car but it wasn't on it, was in the frunk. Didn't know what it was until he was pissed cuz he was going through 1-2 a year and was like what is that, well it fits right here and hasn't had a problem since. So I stole his og owners idea and copied it lol, my alternator is 2yrs old now

sorry, i don't agree. the reman Toyota or OEM Toyotas do MUCH better than the others mentioned. lifetime warranty is fine, but the time and effort need to R&R them as often as necessary is NOT worth it IMO.
if you've got leaks, then repair the leaks then fashion a shield. it's my opinion that repair the problem rather than engineer around the problem. engineering solution comes later.

ok..some confusion.engineering shield may be ideal as leaks are from manufactured cut ventilation holes..?also is the moisture the cause of the power being drained when off?
