Check Oil

Howdy all,
New to the group and owning my first MR2. It's a 1987 and I LOVE this thing. I had driven Fiat Spyders for years but they can't hold a candle to this. I have a dumb question, so be easy on me. How do I check the freakin' oil? I've looked and looked and I'm still stumped. I'll have to get the manuals you guys have mentioned in other posts but for now I just need this question answered. Thanks in advance. BTW, I live in Westfield NY on Lake Erie in grape country near the PA line. Anyone near me? Thanks in advance.

I believe it's on the exhaust side.

Hi Skylar,

Actually it's almost dead center, slightly to the rear, of the front of the engine. Way down near the belt and easier done with radiator overflow container removed in some cases.

To check the transmission oil, there is a large flat bolt on the side that loosens. If you undo the big ol bolt and there is some fluid oozing out the levels OK. If not, add as needed till it overfills and replace the bolt. This should be changed 30-60,000 miles or every 2 years, it nevers gets "dirty".

BTW the inspection caps on the rear of the front axles can be removed to grease the front bearings.!!

Want more Mark 1 advice? write me a PM.

Congradulations on your mid-engined choice.

Thanks for the info. I am sorry that I didn't reply sooner, but health problems took over my life. All is well now and again, thanks for the info.

On 87 MR2s the dipstick for the oil is located between the rear water neck and the alternator. The oil filter is located on the exhaust side towards the timing belt side of the motor.

On newer MR2's (91+) they are located on the exhaust side near the exhaust like stated above. But because you have an 87, its between the water neck and alternator.
