1991-1995 MR2 safety ratings?

I am thinking about purchasing an MR2 and was wondering how safe and reliable the car is? Is there any problem with the engine being so close to the driver, say if you get rear ended is there a chance of being injured due to the engine being right behind you?

think of it this way....in a front engine car....won't rear ending someone increase the chance of the motor crushing u too??...same principle applies here....if somebody rear ends u....unless its a serious impact..u should be fine....the rear trunk would act as a crumple zone....

The car itself is safe but safety mainly starts from the driver. The driver has to know the car's limit and capability, and also aware of other vehicles on the road.

The car is reliable if maintained properly. If the owner abuse the car and knows very little about the car, the chance is that the car is not reliable.

If you get rear ended, that the same as getting your front ramped into another car....the engine in front or the engine in rear. Same shit! Its the driver!

Cheers!

It's not really any closer than a front engine car. If you're rear ended at a fast enough speed, the crumple zones in the frame deform and absorb the energy. The engine essentially sags to the bottom just like a front engine car, but that'd have to be an amazingly fast rear end hit.

As for safety information, niche vehicles are not required to be tested and therefore are not. There are no government crash test ratings for the MR2 nor are there IIHS ratings. The front end uses quite a bit of steel reinforcement, so it does protect.
