Question 3SGTE: Gen 1 vs Gen 2

Just by looking, can you tell the difference between gen 1 and gen 2 block. I'm not talking about the complete engine, but just the short block alone.

I know that the gen 3 and gen 2 has different location of the oil filter.

Anyone?

im not sure the outside of the gen 1 looks any different but i know the internals are. Why would you want a gen 1 anyway? do yourself a favor and just stick with a gen2

well... a few details.

1st gen 3sgte ONLY (in the US) ever came in the AllTrac Celica. this had a small air-to-water heat exchanger resting over the head of the engine. later models of the AllTrac Celica had either larger air-to-water heat exchangers OR air-to-air intercoolers (depending on which country its from).

the Mr2 uses an air-to-air intercooler setup.

here are examples of each:

1st Gen 3sgte - USDM AllTrac Celica

2nd Gen 3sgte - JDM AllTrac Celica

2nd Gen 3sgte - USDM AllTrac Celica

2nd Gen 3sgte - USDM Mr2 Turbo

hope this helps.

if your Camry Wagon comes with the 3sfe, then the 3sg(t)e is a direct drop in. you will need to sort out the wiring and transmission issue of course.

i cannot comment if your Camry Wagon has the 3VZ (v6) option.
