5th gear pooping out

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with 5th gear popping out when shifting at over 3000 rpm (won't go in - just kicks it back out). Doesn't do it at 2500 and below.

The car is a 91 non-turbo with the stock S54 transmission. I thought it might be the synchro's but there is no grinding when I shift. Could this be a linkage issue?

i had the same problem with a 97 camry, it turned out to be the synchro', yeah it didnt grind going into gear but it would pop back out after 2000 rpm, tranny shop repalced it and at the same time repalced the clutch and pressure plate. problem fixed. i later found out the car was used to teach two kids to drive standard. so the clutch was due after that beatin
