'91 MR2 5SFE Been sitting 2 years won't start

Hi,

MR2 been sitting for two years, new battery and put some fresh fuel in (it smells bad of old fuel) Engine cranks but won't fire. Looking for steps to get it running. Should I pull the plugs, change fuel filter, blow through the lines and stuff?

Many thanks.

Only a few things are required for it to start: air, fuel, spark, timing, compression.

Compression -- presumably good if it was running when parked.
Air -- presumably good enough unless you wrapped the intake in plastic for some reason.

Spark -- pull a plug wire and make sure you have a spark if you crank the engine and hold the plug wire about 1/8" from the valve cover.

Fuel -- Jump two pins in the diagnostic box in the engine bay (FP and B+) -- you should hear the fuel pump.

If you pass on all that, your timing is probably off.

I appreciate the response Ghostyman.

I'm pretty sure it has all but fuel, didn't hear the fuel pump when turned the key, I'll try jumping those pins.....If it's not getting fuel, do you know the location of the fuel filter and fuel pump by chance? I have a spark tester that I can put inline and check for spark. Maybe I can tip some fuel in the plug holes as well to see if it fires...cheers

I'm not sure for the NA cars because I have a turbo but here's the locations on turbo MR2s:

Fuel filter is low on the drivers side of the firewall. Filter is a black cylinder, about the size of a soda can, kinda looks like an ignition coil. Fuel pump is in the gas tank and is a pain in the ass to get to.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Going to check the fuel pump now. Just posting this link so I can get to it later if I need to remove the fuel tank.

Hey ghostyman,

I checked for spark, it's good. I also cracked the fuel line banjo fitting on the fuel filter and saw a little bit of fuel coming out when it was cranking. But when I pull the plugs they are dry as a bone, so I'm guessing either the fuel pump is indeed bad, or there is a blockage between the fuel filter and the injector rail/injectors.

I couldn't figure out which pins FP and B+ I need to jump across to test the fuel pump? The diagnostic box in the engine bay, I see a couple of fuses, some relays and some wiring harnesses in there. I'm guess I need to disconnect a harness and jump across some pins in the connector?

I'll look for a wiring schematic and appreciate your help...

The box we're looking for doesn't have fuses, relays, etc... that's probably the fuse box. The diagnostic box is small and looks like this when opened:

You can use a paperclip to jump FP and B+ and I'm pretty sure the fuel pump should start.

The most common use for this box is to pull the Check Engine Light codes. That would be worth doing in this case. Use a paperclip to jump TE1 and E1... heck, just check this page { http://www.clublexus.com/forums/es30...ght-codes.html } for instructions.

Ok thanks, Yup I see the diagnostic now. I jumped Fp and B and didn't hear the fuel pump, I also had the fuel line cracked at the filter and nothing is coming out. So what's next? I gotta jack it up and drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump?

before you actually drop the tank I would jack up the back of the car, put it on jackstands; get a long ratchet extension the you can put one end on the tank and the other on your ear; then have someone turn on the ignition, you will be able to hear the fuel pump turn on, if it is!

Something that might be easier would be to remove the feed line at the fuel filter then turn on the ignition, if fuel starts coming out good, if not you either had some mice make a nest and chewed up the wires, or the fuel pump went bad. If you have fuel come out of that line re-connect it and remove it at the fuel rail and turn on the ignition again.

Also did you drain the old gas out of the tank or did you just put new stuff in with the old?

I'll try that.

The fuel tank gauge is bad I guess as it reads totally empty. I put about 2 gallons of premium in it without draining anything out. The fuel gauge still reads totally empty. Maybe there is a mouse nest in the tank.

I'll be working on it some more later this week and will get back to you. I also need to read the codes if there are any.

Just a small update I checked the CEL codes today and found just a 24.

which I think is:
Code 24 Intake temperature sensor circuit fault
