When I was driving home my check engine light turned on, just from driving it, there did not seem to be anything wrong at this particular moment. Its too late in the day to actually check to see what may be wrong.
The car has been leaking quite a bit of oil, I have resealed the top and bottom, so after asking my father, he suggested it may be leaking from the internal pan in the engine. Also I learned that the previous owner had not adequately supplied the car with enough coolant nor did a timely oil change on the car.
Its a 5sfe engine with about 250 thousand miles on it, so I was expecting some issues with it but I am not sure where to approach this issue first. I was told that it may be my catalytic converter that I just installed that may have caused the issue because the 1991 models were not made for them that it could cause some issues, I am not sure on the credibility of this tho.
If someone could give me a good starting point to tackle this problem I will gladly appreciate it. I am looking into buying a like new 3SGTE from jdm, tho I am not sure if my tranny is correct for it nor do I have the money for it just quite yet.
Go to the diagnostic box on the back fire wall and cross connect terminals Te1 and E1.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Look at the Check Engine lite.
Count the flashes.
There will be 2 sets. Count the 1st set, then there will be a slight pause, then count the second set.
Eg.- 1st set-3 flashes , 2nd set-5 flashes.
3 and 5 would be code 35.
Then you can look up the corresponding malfunction description.
Alright so it turned out the code was a 21 which is dealing with the oxygen sensor. I honestly think my O2 sensor is shot and needs to be replaced, I was going to do that a while back but other things got in the way. thanks for the help guys. Oh and the reason I am thinking about replacing it, is because to my knowledge the previous owner had said he had never replaced the O2 sensors in the 8 years he has owned the car and doesnt know if the owner before him had either.

Well don't use Bosch O2 sensors. They'll cause intermittent CELs while driving and some other issues. Use Denso or NGK replacement O2s. They're about $35-40.

I did replace my O2 sensors with NGK replacements, however my check engine light is still on and for the same code. Since it is dealing with the O2 could it be that there isn't sufficient O2 or too much O2?
ran into this a few times. do you travel at an even pace for long periods of time?
if so, when it happens, just downshift and high rev it for a few moments. if the CEL goes away, then yes is it your O2 sensor. its a really common problem.
