I got an offer to trade my 91 MR2 Turbo that doesn't run (knocks) and for a 91 eclipse turbo that does run (rebuilt). I kinda wanna get your guys opinion on the situation.
my mods: rebuilt motor with .02 over bore, head work, td06 turbo, greddy intercooler, ats wastegate, tko exhaust, hks flywheel, rps clutch. It started knocking about 200 miles after rebuild and I dropped the pan and it is NOT a spun bearing.
eclipse mods: intake and a ghetto exhaust set up. But it runs and seems really reliable.
what do u guys think?.....I was thinking about it and remember a friends honda having a similar knock that my mr2 has and it ended up being the water pump...
I'd fix the MR2-especially since you have those upgrades.
Unlike the Eclipse, the MR2 Turbo is a true sports car.
+1

Just like the 300ZX's V6's these Eclipse blocks have a very BAD reputation at the import yards and smart yard owners won't warranty them. Or if they do, it's radically expensive to allow a profit when they have to get you another one.
The cyl heads are well engineered w "roller" cams, but a head does not make a complete engine.

I would think the red flag to think about is that someone is willing to trade a "reliable" car for one that is clearly broken. Kinda makes you think about how he feels about his own car.
Both cars suck since yours is dead & those year talon/eclipses are butt ugly. It depends if you want a dead car or a running car. Thats all that it would come down to.
A MR2 vs Eclipse/Talon is what this thread would probably turn into. hahaha... I love both cars & had the most luck with my Eclipse than MR2. MR2 ended up with a blown block on a CT26 w/upgraded trim. My Eclipse with a T4 ran for 6 years no problem on 22psi & neve left me stranded through summer & winter. MR2 was really bad for winter & regular maintenance drove me nuts. BIG plus for the looks of the MR2 thats why I hung in there.
Both are same build pretty much with clip ons & plastic. hahaha
Keep the MR2 and see if it is not the water pump, if the engine is done, try to get another MR2 and use yours for partss. One of the reasons the other guy wants to sell, is there is no guarantee how long Mitsubishi is going to continue to sell vehicles in this country, or at all. If that happens, parts for these cars will dry up.
take this advice from a former owner of a GSX that was making 900 to all 4 tires and and a bone stock GSX as well . i had more problems out of my stock than my built one and had to correct about 70% of misubishi's short comings . for starters the infamous crank walk due to the poor design of the thrust bearings . to correct that it will run you about 1000.00 bucks and thats cheap. thats also major block work . second the balance shafts the always leak . and if left unchecked will eat the block over time . most people like me just delete them and have the crank balanced. again another 400 to 600 bucks . the pistons are another issue they dont like and just cant handle running lean for a second . melted a few my self . the rods are ok but thats about it . in total after buying upgraded parts to hold up having the block corrected i had over 5000.00+ just in the bottom end and another 5000.00 in the head . cams aint cheap. nore are valves for that P.O.S. granted i could walk a twin turbod vette like it was taking candy from a baby .
but the cost and consistently having to readjust the valves every oil change, pull the oil pan and check the rods for stress and check the bearings every 3 oil changes . and check the thrust bearing all the time it just aint worth it and all of this was on my stock GSX. the GST that your looking at is the same just not AWD.
SO HEAD MY ADVICE DONT DO IT AND GET AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the 1st gen Eclipse came with the 1st gen 4g63. the picture above is accurate to what you'll experience.
also:
"From 1990 to late April 1992 came beefier connecting rods and the use of 6 bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft; May 1992 to 2006 Evolution versions have lighter rods and use 7 bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft."
not12listen is correct i had the old crank taken out of my old eclipse and had legs put on it and then added a chain leash so at car shows my car had a guard dog lol

You know how a small subset of the population refers to MR2s as "chick cars"? Everybody calls Eclipses that. You won't be happy at going from an affordable exotic to a cookie cutter ricemobile.

All i can say to that is....if you really know how to work on cars then the MR2 is easy to maintain. I have owned 4 MR2's Turbo and non turbo, never had a problem on them i cant fix. They are based off corolla and camry drive trains after-all.
But I suppose is if all you know is bolt-ons and mass produced junk, then I guess the MR2 would be a challenge.
MR2 ended up with a blown block on a CT26 w/upgraded trim.
Thats what usuually happens when you "upgrade" the CT26 without the proper supporting turbine and fuel mods.
You end up going lean and/or bottlenecking at the turbine.
