Gear Oil - MK1 SC

After much research I changed my gear oil in my 89 SC today. I used Redline 75w-90NS instead of the MT-90 that most others said to use. The MT-90 is the same weight but several places including a Redline tech told me that the 75w-90NS was the proper choice as it is GL5 rated vs GL4 & the SC transmission says to use a GL5 gear oil. It has the same benefits for easier shifting so I'm looking forward to seeing how it works.

There are many posts recommending the redline gear oil. everyone seems to be very happy with that brand-in both 1st and 2nd gens.
I'll be interested to hear what you think about it after time.

As I get some time with it I'll update everyone on the results. I just figured that the 75w-90NS would give better gear protection along with syncro benefits that are offered by the MT-90.

As a side note I had no issue getting the drain bolt or fill bolt off. I than filled it from the top bolt after removing the intercooler. Easiest gear oil change ever.

if you like the Redline gear oil, take a look for Swepco 201 gear oil.

quite honestly, AMAZING stuff!

my subaru had 5th gear grind. i put this stuff in and it was GONE.

my wife had 3rd gear grind in her Mr2. same result - the gear grind is gone.

admittedly, its been quite some time, and that gear grind has come back, but it is not as pronounced as it used to be.

Your Supercharged Model came with a E-51 transmission that actually has a small oil pump incorporated into the transmission. This lubrication method is opposed to the C-52 (&50's) which do not. Therefore, this should be considered when choosing GL4's vs 5's??

Also it has a tiny loop of tubing that acts as a oil cooler, which to me is kinda like? Doh why bother?

This viscosity issue is a big factor to for me as a competition participant with a larger oil cooler that replaces the pitiful stock unit.

The real pain for me is that this E-51 has to be drained to pull the half-shafts out as this big ol' bathtub case carries a ton of fluid.

There's allways that tradeoff in racing I guess.

I was amazed that my transmission takes 4.5 quarts to fill it up from dry or 4.0 for a drain & refill. My 07 Matrix only holds 2 quarts.
