Been a while since i have been back on here. Figured i would give alittle update on my car. For anyone that remembers me this is the car i have been working on for the past 3 years now and am finally getting it done. Here is a pic of the car
and here is a pic of the engine installed about 3 months ago
and now the story....
Well i had it "running" or at least i thought. (this is a fully built motor, the works) We ran it around the block a few times. It seemed fine. Checked temps, all that good stuff. Then dumped the oil again. Ran it some more, all seemed good. So i figured its time to finally give this a drive. Well about 10 miles into the drive i pull over and the car shuts off, oil all over the ground.
So now i tow it back and its times to resolve this. (mind you this has been a long time coming to drive so i am pissed to say the least). We check it over and find ZERO compression....not good. So at this point it has been three of my friends and i doing all the work on the car, i figure its time i got someone working on this car that really knows an MR2. So i had it towed to his garage. His findings are below.
First thing he noticed is that the headgasket is in fact UPSIDEDOWN!!! This caused the oil feed port to the head to be blocked, therefore the head got absolutely NO oil. Notice in the picture below that the arrow on the bottomside of the headgasket in the upper right corner of the picture, should be pointing the other way
now then, he went and removed the head and he said there appeared to be no damage (which was confirmed by a machine shop) and then noticed that 2 of the pistons appeared to be backwards. Notice in the picture below that the valve reliefs of 2 and 3 are 180 degrees
after this is was onto the block. He then realized that the motor would not turn by hand (it was seized) so something major was wrong. He took the oil pan off and first found that the main caps were all pointing the right way however instead of going 1-2-3-4-5 they were going 5-4-3-2-1. See below
and now onto the final big mistake. I had numerous problems getting the correct bearings for this car. We had to exchange the main bearing 3 times and the rod bearings once. Well i guess we should have exchanged the rod bearings one more time because they were what seized the block. Here is a picture of what the rod bearings looked like. Now i must stress this is only 10 miles of wear on them
So now my engine is being redone by a machine shop (lesson learned there) and there appears to be no major damage. Which is very lucky considering what could have happened to this. All of my internals are good (pistons, rods, crank) the head and cams are good, all it will cost me is some new bearings, machine shop work, gaskets, and labor. All in all i may finally get a running car after this.
Hope you enjoyed the story, haha. Please retain from tons of flaming on this. We screwed up on this engine. We have worked on other cars before but this was the first attempt on the 3sgte and there were alot of things that we had never seen before like a headgasket that is able to be installed upside down. Or pistons which different valve reliefs.
Anyway its been a while since i have been on here, i'll be posting around again.
