Alternator?

Hey, this morning I went out to my car to go to class and the battery was dead. Engine was turning over just not enough juice to turn it over fast enough. I jump started the engine and it died about 15 seconds after I unhooked it. I am thinking its the altenator.

Now that leaves me with my next question. How do I get access to the altenator. It has the 3sgte engine. I heard I need to remove the lower crossmember. Any information will be very helpful!

Thanks

Hmm? I replaced my alternator earlier this year. It barely squeezed past the cross member. I think the issue is the stock exhaust.

I no longer have the stock exhaust, so it was pretty easy to get it in.

you dont need to remove the crossmember. There will be enough room. And the best way to access it is to remove the cruise control box next to the intake manifold. Then you will be able to access the bolts needed to loosen it. And the wiring is accessed from below. It is not a fun install though the first time doing it.

Easiest way is:

* jack the car up and put some jack stands in the stock jacking poiints that are just forward of the rear wheels
* Using a 17mm socket loosen the 4 bolts (2 on each side) that hold the crossmember (subframe support) to the car from underneath. Lower the crossmember about 1". You don't need to remove the bolts, just loosen them in order to allow the crossmember hang lower
* Loosen the alternator tensioner bolt. Remove the alternator belt. Remove the top and bottom mounting bolts for the alternator, and remove the wiring connectors.
* Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle until the alternator comes loose. You sometimes need to pry on it with a long bar to loosen up the alternator

Bring it out of the bottom, put the new one in. Bolt everything on, put the wiring connectors on. And then tighten up the 4 bolts that hold the crossmember on and you're all done.

which is the tensioner bolt, the 14mm bolt found underneath, or the 12mm (connected to the skinny bolt with bracket) from the top of the engine bay? i removed both, but belt still remains tensioned. maybe im missing something.

The 14mm at the bottom is the anchor bolt. It must be removed.

The 12mm at the top front aiming towards the cabin is the tension adjuster bolt. It does't need to be removed, just loosened to removed the tension from belt.

The 12mm on the side is the tension lockdown bolt.
It needs to be removed.
After removal, push alternator forward to remove tension from belt.

Those are the only bolts holding it in place.

After disconnecting the wires from the alternator, you can remove it from the bracket.
It's wedged in there very tight and you will probably have to pry it loose with a big screwdriver or small pry bar.

remove 14 mm bolt underneath, remove 12mm bolt facing passenger side of car which also holds in place 12mm (skinny) tension bolt facing cabin of car. loosen tension bolt, and relieve tension of belt . got it.

what a day, i was able to get the alternator to drop out of its bracket onto the cross member. i loosened the 4 17mm bolts as well as the 314mm bolts in the middle, but apparently not enough. i also had to take the stock exhaust apart to give it more room to work with. how long are the cross member bolts? i probably only have them down about 1/2 inch, assuming i need to lower it a little more. is the 83lb torque spec for all bolts, or just the 4 17mm ones? thanks.

i finally got the new alternator in its place and bolted up. i wont be able to finish everything until i buy a new battery and gaskets for the exhaust. is there a specification for the tension bolt that tensions the top bolt on the alternator? i have a pic if we need clarification. thanks.

Well, there's not one in my BGB. I just snug it down. No issues.
